Shot-by-shot description of J.J. Abrams' Super 8 teaser trailer

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, May 6, 2010

The curtain has been raised on J.J. Abrams next (and super secret) movie project. It indeed is called Super 8 and Abrams is directing from his own screenplay. The producers are Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk. The film is a co-production between Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and Abrams' Bad Robot.

This information comes not from an official announcement from Paramount Pictures but by the title credit card seen at the end of the Super 8 teaser trailer, set to begin showing in front of screenings of Iron Man 2 beginning tomorrow.

A description of the trailer follows. If you want to stay unspoiled, leave now!

The trailer begins:

We see a quick display of blurry images and hear the background chatter of what sounds like a police radio band. Smash cut to a black screen and the following sentence:

"In 1979, the U.S. Air Force closed a section of Area 51."

Cut to a close-up of a railroad crossing guard coming down somewhere remote and at night. The headlights of a speeding pick-up truck appear in the distance.

Cut back to a new title card: "All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio."

Smash cut back to the speeding pick-up, now breaking through the wood safety rail blocking traffic through the rail tracks. The truck's breaks, swinging to a stop on the tracks. It then accelerates down the tracks towards the headlight of the oncoming train.

Cut to the point-of-view of the driver. As the railway planks speed by under us the light of the oncoming train grows in intensity. The train sounds its warning horn.

New title card: "From executive producer Steven Spielberg". More police-sounding radio chatter is heard.

Now we see the truck smash head-on into the locomotive engine. A fireball erupts as debris flies. The train starts to derail, cars flying off into the night. We can see from the light of the explosions that the train is indeed in a remote area with no civilization or people around it.

New title card: "And director J.J. Abrams"

Now we see the aftermath of the train derailment. Cars little the ground around the railroad. Small fires are burning. There is silence until the sound of something striking the inside of one of the boxcars is heard and seen.

New title card: "Next summer"

Then, very quickly, before the resolve back to the train accident, there appears to be a flash of what looks like a human skull frozen in a scream, followed by what looks like film stock that's burned or charred displayed against a white light. Very rapid.

More banging is heard. A power pole falls against the boxcar, setting off a shower of sparks. This time we see the side of the boxcar bulge outward as something inside strikes against it powerfully.

New title card: "It arrives"

Close-up view of the door of the fallen steel boxcar. The logo of the U.S. Air Force is on it as well as a circular wheel to open the door. We see more strikes from inside against the side of the box car -- they're punches, bucking the metal outward. The wheel begins to spin slowly and then rapidly before finally flying off.

Rapidly: An explosion of light as the camera pulls back. We can see that we're now looking at the close-up of the lens of a film projector that's been turned on. We can see some sort of image before the film ends and a stream of letters quickly fly up the inside of the lens.

New title card: "SUPER 8" followed by the film's known credits (Spielberg, Burk, Abrams).

The film's website has also launched: www.super8-movie.com. As of late Thursday night there's nothing much to see on the site except for the close-up of the film projector and the ability to join several social media outlets to promote the movie.

I got sucked into the Cloverfield viral marketing quite a bit. It was fun. I also think there's still more story to tell there as well. There seems to be a lot of hate for Cloverfield, I guess because of the shakey cam and the friends were all a little too attractive....None of that bothered me. At least this one is supposed to be traditionally shot. Looks like it'll be fun.
