The best Batman fan film so far may be City of Scars

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, June 19, 2010

What's the appeal to amateur filmmakers to invest their manpower and money to make Batman fan films? Remember Batman: Dead End, the short film that Sandy Collora made back in 2003? Or what about John Fiorella's Grayson, the Robin wish-it-could-have-been trailer? If you thought that you had seen the best of what could be done with Batman on a microbudget, this brand new short may make you reevaluate your opinion. It doesn't even have the word "Batman" in its title.

Welcome to City of Scars.

Directed and co-written by Aaron Schoenke, it's another fan production. However, unlike earlier Batman fan-films, City of Scars runs at an impressive 26-minutes in length (30 mins and change if you could the end credits.) Created by Bat in the Sun, a Los Angeles-based film and music production created by Schoenke and his brother Sean (who also composed the music for City of Scars), the film has high production values, numerous sets, good use of CG effects, great fight choreography and solid acting by the players. It's not perfect but it's definately worth your investment of a half-hour to watch all the way through.

City of Scars follows the Batman on a frantic rescue mission. The Joker has escaped from Arkham Asylum again and he's kidnapped a young boy, murdering both of his parents in the process. The crisis hits Batman's psyche hard as he's forced to recall the night his own parents were murdered by one of Gotham's criminals. As well, the Dark Knight begins to bring his own methodology into question as some of the city's police members and citizens ask the question why The Joker hasn't been put down once and for all, knowing that he will always find a way out of Arkham to spill innocent blood again and again. Is the pain of losing both his parents blinding Batman from bringing an end to the Joker's madness permanently?

And if you liked City of Scars, check out Aaron Schoenke's earlier Batman inspired short film Patient J, another half-hour short film that shows a psychiatrist interviewing Joker within the criminal mastermind's cell. The Joker is played by the same actor in both films, Paul Monlar.

DC should talk to him about doing a few shorts a year, or maybe a 6 episode season of webisodes.  Hell, I'd pay for that content.  That was a fantastic short.  Right up there, as Pat notes, with Dead End and the World's Finest and Grayson trailers.

Also, cool logo design.

They should have their own series.  That was great.
