Toy Story 3 opening shatters Pixar's box office record

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, June 20, 2010

Toy Story 3 is one of the year's best reviewed movies so far (read my thoughts on it here) but now it's become the personal best for its makers. Pixar's 11th animated feature took in an estimated $109 million dollars over its three-day opening, easily besting the opening $70.4 million dollar take of The Incredibles.

The first Toy Story amassed $191 million in its theatrical run and Toy Story 2 grossed $245m. Toy Story 3 should surpass both and wind up north of $300 million once all is said and done. Whether it can exceed the $334 million domestic that Finding Nemo took in during the summer of '02 remains to be seen, but even if TS3 doesn't, it's still going to be one of Pixar's biggest success stories to date.

In its second weekend out Sony's The Karate Kid netted $29m, bringing its total cume to $106.2m and counting. This is the first true underdog hit of the summer, a picture made for only $40 million dollars and with no major stars in it. I've heard that the pic has heart which is something that The Blind Side cashed in on last winter to great success. How long until the remake of Rocky gets announced?

It's the second weekend out for The A-Team as well, dropping to third overall ($13.7m new, $49.7m total). Get Him to the Greek remains in spot #4 ($6.1m new, $47.8m total), Shrek Forever After is fifth ($5.5m new, $222.9m total) and Prince of Persia is now sixth ($5.2m new, $80.5m total). As summer releases, those aren't big figures at all for the studios, though Disney is likely to be dumping Prince quickly to make way for The Sorcerer's Apprentice in a couple of weeks. Also, Killers drops two to #7 ($5.1, new, $39.3m total)

And now we come to the week's other major release, Jonah Hex. My my my: opening at #8 with $5.5 mil is certainly embarassing for everyone involved with this stinker. At least we got to see Megan Fox showing off her cleavage in it.

Last week Iron Man 2 has crossed the three hundred million threshold ($2.6m new, $304.7m total, #8 spot) and Marmaduke brings up the rear in more ways than one by being in tenth place ($2.6m new, $27.8m total). Sex and the City 2 has fallen to #11 and just made $90 million, well off from the $150m domestic the first picture took in. If Sex and the City 3 is greenlit Sarah Jessica Parker shouldn't expect to earn as big a paycheck from it (rumor has it she got $15 million and a percentage of the profits, as small as they might be.)
