DC Entertainment, the branch of Time-Warner that was formed last year to maximize the movie and television opportunities for DC Comics characters, is being relocated to sunny California from New York City. The move will effect about 200 employees, with some jobs being terminated and other new positions offered. None of the DC Comics personnel will take the trip.
Also, WildStorm Entertainment will be shuttered. That was the company that comic book artist superstar Jim Lee formed when he founded Image Comics back in the mid-1990s. WildStorm eventually was folded into DC Comics back in 2000, and Lee has been working on special projects for the publisher ever since (like creating character designs for DC Online, the new MMO being made.)
If you read between the lines, the move is happening because it's easier for Hollywood creatives to have meetings in their own backyard instead of having to take a trip on a plane across the country. The more meetings with A-list screenwriters, actors, directors and producers about making DC Comics properties, the greater the chance of something solid materializing from the talks.
There's also more synergy between a California-based DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the video game division of the company.
The move should be complete by 2011.
