Sean Young's home movies show us the making of David Lynch's Dune

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, December 24, 2010

After making Stripes in 1981 and Blade Runner the next year, Sean Young was considered one of tinseltown's rising actresses. Through the 80s she had several parts in major releases such as David Lynch's failed but visually striking adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune and a brief part in Oliver Stone's Wall Street.

But back in 1988 Young's career begin to take an unexpected detour. She had won the role of Vicki Vale in Tim Burton's Batman but a couple of weeks before shooting was scheduled to begin Young injured her shoulder in a riding accident. The injury was bad enough that her part needed to be recast, and that's how Kim Basinger got the part in the movie.

Two years later, the world was hungry for another Batman movie, and Young wanted to be a part of it. She knew that Catwoman was set to be introduced in Batman Returns and Young wanted that part. Trying to flag the interest of Burton, she dressed up in costume and approached the director and Michael Keaton on the Warner Bros. lot. When the news got out that she had done this, the mainstream media was fast to paint a picture of a loony, desperate actress trying to find work. In today's age of viral videos and punk'd fictional TV shows, Young's idea to try and convince Burton that she could pull off Catwoman doesn't seem crazy at all.

But the damage was done. Young's career took a hit and she suddenly found herself with a dangerous reputation in show business. She undoubtedly lost higher profile roles because of the Catwoman incident but she remained working, taking roles in TV and smaller movies. Now it seems that technology has finally caught up to Sean Young and she's been given a great tool to show us her experience in the Hollywood system: YouTube.

No one told me this until I learned it from a friend's Facebook posting last night but the actress has a YouTube channel and she's using it to vblog about her experiences in Hollywood. Young's Pariah YouTube channel has a dozen videos on it right now but the one that grabbed my immediate interest was her collection of Super 8 home videos she took while making Dune with David Lynch. Providing narration over the imagery, Young candidly explains her thoughts at the time making the movie. Some of her comments are particularly revealing, including why actor Aldo Ray was recast and the formidable challenges that David Lynch faced turning a beloved and extremely complex novel into a functional two-hour movie. For fans of behind-the-scenes Hollywood stuff or Lynch's Dune, this video is a must see.

Sean Young was on the premiere season of Skating With the Stars. She's much bigger heightwise than I thought she'd be. She's also not a very good skater.
