We've now got our Superman, a Brit named Henry Cavill. We've got actress rumored to be up for a beefy female part, and we've got word that Kevin Costner is being considered to play Superman's adoptive father from Earth. Now we have a name for who could be playing the main villain role in Zack Snyder's Superman movie.
It's Viggo Mortensen, and he's being considered for the role of General Zod.
The story comes from The Hollywood Reporter who also adds that Mortensen is a "person of interest" for the production. In Hollywood business speak that means that Snyder and Christopher Nolan would like to see someone like The Lord of the Rings actor play the heavy in their Superman movie. From a fan perspective such a casting move would be great to see; have you ever seen Viggo play Lucifer in that old 90s supernatural thriller The Prophecy? Back then he was an unknown, and as the first of the fallen angels Mortensen stole every scene that he was in. Imagine him playing a commanding force like General Zod, bashing the hell out of Kal-El in both body, mind and spirit. If there is an actor more deserving to speak Terence Stamp's lines "Kneel before Zod!", I can't imagine the guy.
Mortensen is also being talked with about starring alongside Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman. A deal could be reached between Warner Bros. and Universal that would allow Viggo to juggle being on both sets around the same time.

In a testament to geekitude, I read the three-word headline and knew exactly what I was going to find when I opened this article. I think Mortensen is an inspired choice for this role, personally. His body of work is great, and makes folks go "That's the same guy??" From his Master Chief in "GI Jane" to Aragorn in the LotR films, to the posse-member in "Young Guns II" ('I think I need to have a movement...'), just fantastic in everything he does.
