Michael Bay: Transformers 2 "was crap"
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, March 7, 2011
When Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was released almost two years ago, the critics decided to get out their industrial strength sledgehammers and lay into Michael Bay's opus of robot destruction. Some of the comments directed toward the second Transformers movie: mindnumbing, dumb, loud and stupid, a creative mess, and even racist.
Guess who just decided to pick up their own sledgehammer and take a swing at the movie?
"When I look back at it, that was crap. The writers' strike was coming hard and fast. It was just terrible to do a movie where you've got to have a story in three weeks," Michael Bay told Empire magazine, thinking back to those fast and furious days of filmmaking in 2007. Bay's knee-deep in post-production on the third Transformers movie, Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Bay went further into what he thought was one of the second movie's biggest story blunders, that being the "mystical" plot elements that saw Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) encounter The Fallen, the first Decepticon, and then later die and meet the good guy Primes in the Transformer afterlife.
Bay blames the 2007 writers strike for forcing him to go to production without a finished screenplay. "I was prepping a movie for months where I only had 14 pages of some idea of what the movie was. It's a BS way to make a movie, do you know what I'm saying?"
With Dark of the Moon, the director not only thinks that he has a better story but that the 3D element he's brought into the movie works better than other 3D movies. Bay said that he was convinced to use 3D on Transformers 3 due to the urging of James Cameron, director of Avatar. "Cameron was like, 'Mike, directors like you have to do 3D or it is going to die,'" Bay said.
"I think our 3D works really well with the robots, the size, the girth, the weight of it ... it's spectacular."
dear Micheal Bay:
"'Bout fuckin' time you admitted it was crap"
3D is just a gimmick to raise ticket sales.. that's all... i just rented Resident Evil:Afterlife and (aside from the eye-popping opening credits) NOTHING in that movie NEEDED to be in 3D (or took any advantage of 3D at all) as I suspect many of the current crop of 3D flicks are just re-tooled 2d flat movies that get converted into 3D in the post production process. (same with faux-IMAX movies) give me a REAL experience instead of a "Clash of the Titans" faux-3D regular movie where i have to sit and wear stupid glasses for 2.5 hours.

A) Mr. Bay, I knew long before Transformers 2 came out that it would be crap. That is why I didn't go see it.
B) Admitting the last movie was crap will not get me to go see the new one.
C) 3D should die.
