Zack Snyder: "There's been no other Superman movies."
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, March 17, 2011

The director of the new Superman movie spoke about the differences that his movie will have versus the last film to feature the Man of Steel, Superman Returns. For critics that felt that Superman Returns was a slave to Richard Donner's 1979 Superman film, the news will likely be greeted with cautious optimism.
"Respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies," Zack Snyder told Hero Complex's Geoff Boucher in an exclusive interview with the filmmaker. "Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies. If you look at Batman Begins, there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies."
So now we know where Snyder and Christopher Nolan, who incidentally happens to be the director of Batman Begins as well as one of the new Superman's producers, are taking us. It's definitely a reboot.
Snyder also talked highly of the collaborative process that he's sharing with Nolan, saying that they're both marching to the same song. He also believes that we'll get to see Henry Cavill in the Superman costume sooner rather than later. "We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that because [otherwise] someone will be on the set and get a picture of it," explained Snyder.
The director also hinted that his movie will have the son of Jor-El involved with a lot more action than Brandon Routh's Superman engaged in, and that some very interesting casting news would be heard soon. Very soon. "There's more to come and I think it's consistent in its … awesomeness."
