First spy pics from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Rises!

Posted by Den Shewman on Friday, May 6, 2011

What does the green mean for Batman, Catwoman and the rest of the Dark Knight crew?

Trouble, we bet.

Today is the first day of shooting for Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, which means the first spy photos just broke on The Dark Night Community (and appear to have just as quickly taken down). Coming straight off location in Jodhpur, India, the photos show a a close and a far shot of a glowing florescent green pool. Which means…what?

The answer, if you listen to fan speculation, points toward an old foe of Bats resurfacing. In DC Comics’ mythology, Ra’s al Ghul (played so memorably by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins) was hundreds of years old when Batman first met him (in the comics, Ra’s lives well into the 31st century). Ra’s’ longevity is due to his frequent dips in the Lazarus Pits: pools of unknown chemicals that bubble up through the Earth’s surface. Immersion in a Lazarus Pit resurrects the dead, heals the sick and kills the healthy.

So let’s get involved in the speculation market ourselves. This is what we know:

  • Nolan likes to keep his Batman stories rooted in the real world.
  • Warner Bros. has confirmed that Marion Cotillard (Inception) has been cast in The Dark Knight Rises as Miranda Tate, whom a TDKR press release describes as “a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.” Fan speculation had hoped Cotillard might play Talia, Ra’s’ daughter. In the comics, Batman fathered a son, Damian, with Talia.
  • Josh Spence has been cast as Young Ra’s al Ghul and is in Jodhpur this week. This seems to confirm that Young Ra's will be in TDKR, but is it in a flashback to Ra's' past, in current day as a rejuvenated Ra's?
  • The brilliant green of the water in the spy photos is right in line with the color used for greenscreening (digitally replacing an item/person colored green during shooting  with another item/person later in postproduction). So it’s possible that by the time this shot hits the cinemas, the pool will be filled with something other than this green fluid. Maybe something like this? Or maybe they won’t need to change the color at all for a Lazarus Pit.

So, given the above, is it very far afield to think that green pool = Lazarus Pit = Ra’s’ rejuvenation into Josh Spence’s Young Ra’s, brought about with the help of Marion Cotillard’s Talia, who infiltrated Wayne Enterprises as Miranda Tate to get close to Bruce Wayne? (Remember, Ra’s has known Bruce is Batman since Batman Begins.) If so, expect to see sparks and fists fly between the would-be lovers.

Circumstantial? You betcha.

Fun to think about? Damn straight.

And it will all become clear on July 20, 2012.
