Super 8 gets viewed

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, June 12, 2011

Two years ago he brought back Star Trek from the franchise graveyard and rejuvinated it like Spock on the Genesis Planet. Instead of taking the easy route and working on a Star Trek sequel immediately, this weekend J.J. Abrams gave audiences his personal homage to 1980s Steven Spielberg films with Super 8, a mash-up of sci-fi, scary monster on the loose shocks and coming of age moments.

The marketing for Super 8 played to the film's core mystery, the creature that gets loose in a small Ohio town after a train derailment. With no major stars in it but a heavy emphasis on Steven Spielberg's participation as a producer, audiences reacted favorably to Paramount's teasing and elevated Super 8 to a first place finish at the box office with $38 million dollars.

Last week's number one film dropped to second place. X-Men: First Class took in $25m in its second weekend, about a 55% drop from last week's $55m opening. That's an average drop for a blockbuster in its second week, and it suggests that First Class will exit theaters with $150 mil domestic, or about as much as the first X-Men movie earned in 2000.

In third spot was The Hangover Part II. With $18.5 mil scooped up this weekend, it just crossed the $200 million dollar barrier in domestic ticket sales. The sequel is now just $60 million dollars away from beating the theatrical gross of the first Hangover film.

Kung Fu Panda 2 dropped one spot to show up fourth overall this weekend ($16.6m new, $126.9m total). Pirates of the Caribbean 5 was in fifth place ($10.8m new, $208.7m total) and Universal's Bridesmaids fell a single position too ($10.1m new, $123.9m total.)

The other new release couldn't compete with the blockbusters. Relativity Media's teen comedy Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer was hoping to attract the Diary of a Wimpy Kid crowd. That didn't happen and the best it could wind up with was a $6.2 million dollar opening.

Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris picked up an additional 700 screens, boosting its ticket sales but failing to push it higher than #8. After four weeks in release, Allen's 47th film as a director has grossed $14.2 million dollars.

Thor has done its work for its owners. Falling from #6 to #9 this week with a lowly $2.3m in receipts, the superhero movie now stands with a decent six week take of $173.6m domestic. Send forth the sequel!

Finally we arrive at position #10. Can you guess what film took this notch this week? If you were thinking of muscle cars and testosterone, you'd be right. Fast Five may have just a little bit of gas left at theaters ($1.7m in new ticket sales) but it's final tally will ensure that a fill-up is guaranteed ($205 million dollars domestic total to date.)

What's that light I see off in the distance? It looks green.
