Pirates of the Caribbean 4 crosses $1 billion dollar mark in worldwide box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, July 4, 2011
Sometime on Sunday, someone in the world purchased a ticket for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and helped that film traverse the billion dollar mark at the box office. Disney's marketing team, ready for the moment, issued a press release trumpeting the accomplishment while Disney accountants dressed up like Captain Jack Sparrow and drank grog.
The exact tally for Pirates 4 stood at $1,007,703,000 billion dollars. This makes On Stranger Tides the fourth Disney released movie to gross over one billion dollars, following behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066b), Toy Story 3 ($1.063b) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024b).
For all-time box office, On Stranger Tides is third overall behind Avatar ($2.02b) and Titanic ($1.24b).
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made $1 billion dollars after being in theaters for 45 days. However, if you look at the film's domestic box office only, Pirates 4 has performed the worst of all four films in the franchise, with only $233 million dollars netted. The first movie, subtitled The Curse of the Black Pearl, grossed $305m when it came out in 2003. The best domestic box office went to the second picture, Dead Man's Chest, with a high water mark of $423m.
