Prometheus viral video: Happy Birthday David
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Regardless of how the end movie will turn out, the Prometheus viral marketing team is doing a stellar job of marketing their product. Today's gem is a new video featuring Michael Fassbender's David, the Weyland "artificial person" that resides onboard USCSS Prometheus and assists the crew on their mission.
Like the first David viral video (check it out on our Prometheus database page), this new one has an inherit creepy factor to it. Fassbender incorporates an unnerving quality to his character; he acts like something plastic trying to pass itself off as human and doesn't quite manage it. It's an actor acting on purpose to be in the uncanny valley and Fassbender does a terrific job of it.
The other strangeness to the video is in the way of its corporate marketing-speak. There's a Kubrick vibe to the feel of the video, a distancing that keeps the viewer's guard up. Maybe that comes across a little because we know that this is a product of the company that is willing to think that its crew are all expendable, but I think that there's more to it. Whomever directed this video (and I'll try and find out) did just as good a job in its presentation and feel as Fassbender does in front of the camera.
Prometheus opens in 57 days.
