Video: The Avengers movie from 1978 you never saw!
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, May 5, 2012
Generation X and older people know that before there were Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and Hugh Jackman played the X-Men's Wolverine, guys like Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby kicked weekly ass as Marvel's mightest heroes. Back in the late 1970s CBS had The Incredible Hulk TV show on the air. There was even a Captain America TV show that never got further than the pilot episode. While the effects budget that these superhero shows had was really limited, the excitement of just getting to see the Hulk or Captain America or some other comic book hero in live action was enough to satisfy most eager minds back in the age of Atari.
Somebody on YouTube must feel the same way. "Quarv" uploaded his own version of what an Avengers movie circa 1978 would look like using footage from CBS' Incredible Hulk, the Captain America pilot, a 1980s TV Hulk movie where Thor showed up, another failed superhero pilot called Exo-Man (meant to look like a 1970's Iron Man) and material from the high point of the '70s made for TV movies era, naughty-with-satanic-overtones rock band KISS. Wait until you see who Quarv picked to play Loki, the mischievous Norse god that delights in tormenting The Avengers.
The crazy thing about this mash-up shag carpet-era fake Avengers TV movie promo is that it could have looked exactly like this. I was there, I remember what it was like!
