The Avengers beats box office estimates again
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, May 13, 2012
Preliminary figures for this weekend's box office indicate that Marvel's The Avengers will perform better than originally expected. The movie is on track to gross around $103.1 million dollars in its second weekend of release, down 50% from last week's record-setting $208m.
The better-than-expected performance by Avengers is going to close the gap on the one billion dollar mark in worldwide theatrical grosses, pushing the movie just over that threshold. Avengers will have moved past the $1.001 billion in worldwide box office that The Dark Knight made back in 2008, placing Marvel's superhero dream team at the 11th spot just behind Alice in Wonderland ($1.024b).
On the domestic chart this week, Dark Shadows opened in second place with an estimated gross of $28.8m. Think Like a Man is in third with $6.3m, The Hunger Games is in fourth spot with $4.4m and The Lucky One added another $4.0m.

I'm still in shock that, upon seeing these kinds of results from Marvel's Team-Up movie, that Warner Brothers hasn't already greenlit 4 Justice League movies. I remember back in the day when it was such a big deal that Spider-man made $100 million it's opening weekend, that everyone felt they had to react, if for no other reason then to show people they were aware of the phenomenon, such as Daredevil moving their release date up a whole week.
