The Avengers movie crosses $600 million dollars of box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, June 26, 2012
Sometime today The Avengers will move past the $600 million dollar domestic box office mark, a mere 54 days after its release.
The superhero movie is already the third-highest grossing film of all-time, standing behind Titanic ($658.6 million) and Avatar ($760.5 million). The Avengers is also the third-highest grossing movie worldwide with $1.4 billion dollars in ticket sales (Titanic has $2.1b and Avatar $2.7b).
The Avengers is slowing down and will likely not have the steam to move into second place and best Titanic's standing. While Avengers was the fastest movie to reach $200m, $300m, $400m and $500 million (23 days), it's now facing major competition from a crowded summer marketplace. Not coincidentally, both Avatar and Titanic chugged along throughout the winter and early spring when smaller, non-tentpole studio movies are released.
Walt Disney Pictures hasn't formally announced any plans to make The Avengers 2. While cast members Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) are under contracts for more Marvel movies, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) is finishing his contract right now by making Iron Man 3. If Downey is required for the purposes of The Avengers 2, it will have to be under the terms of a new and likely much more lucrative contract.
