Hingle was about credible as Jim Gordon as Neil Hamilton was; that is to say, not at all. At least in Hamilton's favor, you can say that the Batman TV show was never supposed to be taken seriously to begin with. Still, if I could have ripped off Cesar Romero's mustache and pasted it on Hamilton's lip, it would've been a start.
Pat Hingle was a fine character actor...one of those guys you recognize all the time, even if you don't always remember his name. It's almost a shame that guys like him get remembered for bit parts like this -- especially when they're a poor fit -- but then you remember that he made his life out of bit parts.

WOW..rest in Peace Pat Hingle!
as a character actor, you were awesome in Maximum Overdrive and also in the Television remake of Steven King's The Shining (I own it)
as for Batman, how Pat Hingle became Commissioner Gordon I have no idea... he was so ungodly wrong for that part.. and he kept coming back... sequel after sequel after sequel...(apparantly it was in his contract?) he looked nothing like Jim Gordon of the Batman comics or animations, and in the movies, his relationship with Batman sat on the back burner for four straight movies... I fantasy casted Donald Sutherland as Commissioner Gordon and stuck with that choice till I saw Gary Oldman play the Commish... now that was a much better Gordon.
God Speed Mr Hingle, you will be missed!
