The Superbowl is now almost as well known for debuting new movie trailers as it is for being the year's biggest football event. But when Superbowl XLIII rolls out on February 1st, during one of its commercial breaks it will feature a slightly different kind of trailer, one that will be presented in 3-D.
Just before halftime a three-minute preview for DreamWorks' Monsters vs. Aliens will beam out on the network and be broadcast in 3-D. To deliver the full effect to the audience over 150 million Pepsi/SoBe 3D glasses are being given away at 28,000 grocery, drug and electronic stores free to consumers. DreamWorks Animation prez Jeffrey Katzenberg has said that the special shades will deliver a superior viewing performance to spectators using technology created by Intel and ColorCode. Katz was less informative to say precisely how much the 180-second spot will cost his company, instead offering to say that the final price tag will be somewhere in the tens of millions.
Monsters vs. Aliens, featuring the voice talents of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert and Rainn Wilson, opens in both digital theaters as well as IMAX theaters on March 27, 2009. Below is the ad promoting the special preview during Superbowl:
