The Expendables 2 tops out a sluggish end of August
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, August 26, 2012
The Expendables 2 held on to the top position at the box office for a second straight weekend. With a new weekend haul of $13.5 million dollars, Sylvester Stallone's new action franchise has earned $52.3m domestically. Things look good for The Expendables 3 to happen a couple of years from now.
Jeremy Renner is less fortunate. The Bourne Legacy also hung on to the same spot this weekend, remaining #2 with $9.3m in new ticket sales. Two weeks into its run, The Bourne Legacy has only earned $85.5 million -- a luke warm result and one that could mean Universal won't want to make a fifth movie without Matt Damon involved in it.
No change for Focus Features' animated ParaNorman adventure, which stayed at #3 ($8.5m new, $28.2m total.)
And the Will Ferrell comedy The Campaign also stuck like glue to its opening weekend result at #4 ($7.4m new, $64.5m total).
Oddly, it was the movie that's been out for six weeks that actually went up a spot. The Dark Knight Rises moved to #5 with $7.1m in new ticket sales, bringing its total domestic gross to $422.1 million dollars. Factoring in ticket sales from international venues, TDKR is about $80 million dollars away from breaking the billion dollar mark.
The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as parents of a boy that grew in their garden, is #6 ($7.1m new, $27m total.)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance in The Dark Knight Rises couldn't help the debut of Premium Rush, his bike courier action flick. The pic opened in seventh place with a tepid $6.3m in revenue.
The documentaru 2016 Obama's America moved up five spots to #8 due to an increase of 922 screens ($6.2m new, $9m total.)
Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, fell down one spot to #9 ($6m new, $45m total.)
And in tenth spot we've got Dax Shepard's new comedy Hit and Run with its $4.6m opening. If Dax is upset by that, he shouldn't be: The Appartion, the supernatural thriller released by Warner Bros., could only debut at #12 with a tiny $2.9m opening weekend. Now that's scary.
