Revolution has strong ratings in its second week on the air

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, September 25, 2012

It's almost an unspoken rule about science fiction shows on one of the four big networks: they don't last very long, so you better tune in to watch them when they're young. However, a positive indication that this trend could be broken for NBC's new post-apocalyptic hour-long drama Revolution was seen in the show's ratings for its second episode.

Monday night was when the new episode of Revolution aired on the network. Going in, the show had its work cut out for it: ABC was premiering the season debut of Castle that same night (starring once-Firefly captain Nathan Fillion) and CBS had its own debut of Hawaii Five-O to lure watchers toward its network. Both older shows had the luxury of being established, with audiences familiar with the settings and characters, whereas Revolution had not much established cred to its name (save for whatever weight executive producer J.J. Abrams gave to it.)

The good news is that Revolution saw 11 million people tune in to watch its second episode. That turns out to be nearly 85% the size of the audience that watched the show's first episode a week before, a very encouraging sign that people liked what they saw and came back for more.

Based strictly on viewership numbers, ABC's Castle won the contest with 11.4 million pairs of eyeballs tuning in to see Fillion's return. Hawaii Five-O gathered 8 million viewers, a lower number than most industry analysts thought would happen.

Revolution also may have benefitted by having some of the people that watched The Voice, which also had its season premiere episode, stick around. The Voice commanded 11.9 million watchers on its opening night, easily the highest watched show of the evening.

I thought the second episode was good, in fact, better than the pilot.  They are doing well with the big reveals at the end of the episodes, first the identity of Monroe at the end of the pilot and the identity of Monroe's "prisoner" at the end of episode 2.  I still have a ton of questions, but it appears that they are going to address them.

**SPOILER**

The biggest question I have now is how the Monroe Militia came to power and why the American flag represents the rebellion.  They hinted at the answer to that in the previews of next week when a guy accuses Miles of being the one that formed the militia.  And Sebastian mentioned to Rachel something about how Miles used to understand, inidcating that maybe they formed the militia together and had a falling out.

**END SPOILER**

Turn your head and cough!
