Twilight's final Breaking Dawn nearby breaks box office record
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, November 17, 2012

The final Twilight movie is now out in theaters and on track to be one of the highest-grossing installments in the five movie franchise. Breaking Dawn Part 2 opened with early showings on Thursday evening totaling $30.4 million dollars, giving a positive notice to its three stars, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. When the additonal Friday day-evening ticket sales were added up, Breaking Dawn Part 2 had an estimated opening day total of $71.2 million dollars.
As high as that $71m figure sounds it doesn't beat the best opening day showing for the second movie in the series, New Dawn, which grossed $72.7m on its opening day three years ago. As well, the first Breaking Dawn movie had a first day total of $71.6 million dollars, which is just a little bit more north from the estimated grosses of Part 2.
Still, the opening weekend for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 will be richly rewarding for its owners. If the movie holds on track it should end the weekend with around $130 million dollars in domestic ticket sales, recouping its production budget in just the film's first weekend out.
Last week's champ, the new James Bond movie Skyfall, saw its Friday ticket sales drop 60% from this time last week. That's still stronger than the second weekend ticket sales for the previous 007 movie, Quantum of Solace, which also starred current Bond leading man Daniel Craig. Skyfall is receiving better reviews than its predecessor which may account for the better second weekend showing, a fact that might also be attributable to the picture's Oscar-winning director, Sam Mendes.
