Spike's Wild Things like to shred and skate
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, January 17, 2009
A new photo from Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are has surfaced thanks to Slashfilm along with photos of seven skateboards that tie-in to the movie. Jonze is a co-owner of Girl Skateboards Company and so these boards are part of a line of Wild Things products that will be available closer to the release of the film, this October.
The photos showing the seven boards offer our first good glimpse at several of the Wild Things. The movie is an adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved childrens book and tells the story of a young boy named Max who goes off on several adventures with giant animal-like creatures that live in a forest. Jonze has been working on his film for two years and it's been a difficult process for him. Rumor has it after early footage was screened to Warner Bros. the studio nearly pulled the plug on the project, but eventually WB execs made the decision to give the director more time and money to finish his film.
most of the dr Zeuss short stories didnt translate well into film and Horton was bloated to fill its 90 minutes too.
some films work well, steven King has had a number of his short stories adapted into films, Running Man and Stand by Men being two noteworthy examples.
HP Lovecraft wrote From Beyond as a VERY short story (listen to the commentary on the DVD to find out exactly HOW short the story really is compaired to the movie!)
and if I remember correctly, I AM LEGEND was also a very short story taken from a collected works book.
Running Man was a far superior short story to the film.
I Am Legend, whilst not a huge book, wasn't exactly a short story. Cracking read though.
I think it all depends on the story. I mean, the Dr. Seuss stories are a stretch trying to make that into a film. I am suprised they did as well as they did.
As for this film, I am hoping it will be good. The visuals look great and if he has been working on this film for almost two years, he better hope it works!
well now i can sit back and enjoy the satisfaction that I made SlamShut chuckle with one of my famous typos. i was tempted to edit it out, but I think I'll leave it...
Stand by Men isnt that the sequel to 1981's Stand by Your Man?

They only went on one adventure.
Part of the magic of the book was that you saw these surreal images and got to IMAGINE everything about them.
These guys in big suits....not going to work.

Again, a very short story with a simple message...getting stretched into feature length. The Grinch, in its animated form, was the pinnacle of (young) children's works adapted for the screen. The theatrical version was nothing but a worthless bloat.
While I'm certain the monsters will look wonderful (the pics are sweet, no doubt) I can't get my head around why they need to take a book of probably few more than 100 words and turn it into some extravaganza.
What next? The cinematic epic "Goodnight Moon"?
