Watchmen's Tales of the Black Freighter DVD artwork and specs
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, January 31, 2009
Here's the cover art for the Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter DVD scheduled to go on sale come March 24. Available on regular DVD as well as Blu-ray format, Warner Home Video has given us the details on what sort of content will be on each version.
Of course consumers will get the full animated tale of Tales of the Black Freighter, the pirate comic book tale told within the pages of the Watchmen graphic novel. In the animated version the voice of the marooned seafarer at the center of the story will be provided by 300 leading man Gerard Butler.
Also included on the DVD/Blu-ray is "Under the Hood", an hour-long faux-documentary based on the tell-all memoir book of the man that wore the first Nite-Owl costume, Hollis Mason; a featurette titled "Story Within a Story: The Books of the Watchmen" which looks at Black Freighter comic book within the graphic novel; the first chapter of the Watchmen motion comic; and a preview of DC Comics' upcoming Green Lantern animated movie.
These bonus features are only being offered on the Blu-ray version: "The Why of Watchmen", director Zack Snyder talking about his reasons for making the movie; and "The Two Bernies", a deleted scene from the movie that won't be seen in the theatrical cut.
Watchmen: The Tales of the Black Freighter DVD carries a suggested price of $19.95 while the Blu-ray goes for $27.95.
That IS kind of pricey. But sooner or later it'll be up on ebay or amazon for cheaper. I'll be waiting.
I just have to say that that cover art is pretty sweet. It looks like someone actually put a little effort into it.

There are some stills from the cartoon in either the Official Film Companion or The Art of the Watchmen, both of which may already be available at your friendly neighborhood comic shop (despite the official release date being more than a week off).
