So far the living museum attractions are beating the killer robots

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, May 23, 2009

One day into the long Memorial Day weekend and it's shaping up to be a close battle at the box office. With Friday's ticket sales accounted for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is emerging -- but not by much -- as the leader over Terminator Salvation. However, let's not forget that T4 opened on Thursday and made $13.37 million on that day, appeasing some of the hype that expectant fans had who wanted to see the picture ASAP.

Night at the Museum 2 earned $15.3 million on Friday while Terminator 4 netted $14.85 million on 500 less screens that the Ben Stiller comedy. Going into the weekend Night at the Museum 2 had a HypeMeter rating of just 47 based on a measley 2 votes while Terminator Salvation had a HypeMeter rating of 75 based on 15 votes. Clearly the interest among readers of Coming Attractions was with the new Terminator but that's not what it's looking like out there at the box office.

With the summer box office season now fully underway even second and third weekend performances are doing good business. Sony's Angels & Demons came in third position on Friday with an additional $6 million in ticket sales (total cumulative gross $66.1m so far), Paramount's Star Trek was fourth with $5.7m more (total $167m) and the Wayans brothers' new comedy Dance Flick opened to $3.9m in fifth position.

I really hope you are joking! This new Terminator was a disgrace! The writers destroyed Cameron's work!

I'm not joking and stop sucking Cameron's right ball, Marc. :)

While I'll admit there was some over-the-top moments (cough Ending cough), the storyline arc of machine vs. humanity was there with the Marcus character as was the fate arc, which was represented in Cameron's first two films.

How does the new film "destroy" Cameron's work? Terminator was essentially about a killer robot, first and foremost. Very simple story. Terminator 2 expanded upon it by giving the father-son element of how a machine can become a substitute father.

Salvation showed that a man who had his fate handed (sentenced) to him can be saved by machines only to choose the same fate by right of "choice" for humane reasons.

It's all there in TS. See you at Chaotic Radio.

Apparently, the only thing worth watching in the new Museum is Amy Adams' ass.

Richard Gozinya, Harold Snatch and Wilbur Jizz. Together we are the law firm Gozinya, Snatch and Jizz.

Amy Adams in jodhpurs would be well worth the price of admission to me, even if my kid WASN'T interested in the cartoony-ness of the film (which he is....). That said, it'll be a few weeks before I see it. That just seems like a good "Drive-In" kinda movie, to me...

TS, I may see this weekend....not sure how I'm gonna be doing after giving the electric company their cut of my paycheck....

I side with the Salvation-lovers. OK, maybe "love" is a bit much, but let's face it. Take away the ROTK ending, and it would be much better. I really liked Marcus, and wonder what the script was like before Bale jumped in and demanded re-writes to enlarge his role. I disliked Bale in this Role, he over-acted and I didn't see John Connor...I saw Christian Bale. :( But the action was heart-pounding and there were a lot of homages to Cameron's work, much more so than T-3. I think McG did a decent job. I can't stand that people are hating on this film so badly, it wasn't a bad movie by any stretch.

It was, at the most, just sort of bland--as was Night at the Museum, and as are most summer blockbusters. I'm not sure why folks are getting so riled up about it, unless there are way more huge, huge Terminator fans out there than I realized. They didn't seem to be this vocal about the third movie, which was similarly bland. It's not as though there had ever been a "great" John Connor performance for Bale to live up to. (Haven't seen the show, but I've seen T2, and I've seen Rise of the Machines.)

The show is better than both 3 and 4. It made me like Brian Austin Green, something I never thought possible. I'm really going to miss it...

I'm not surprised that Stiller's film is making a bit more money. It has much wider cross demographic appeal that TS.
