One of this summer's biggest films is bound to be the Transformers sequel, Revenge of the Fallen. Opening Wednesday June 24, the page for the second Transformers movie also happens to be the most popular one here at Coming Attractions for the past two weeks (even though it presently only has a HypeMeter rating of 53 based on registered users votes.) Now, however, there's some industry analytical information to back up the notion that Transformers 2 may not just open big but really big.
The evidence was found by HitFix and comes from industry tracking figures that show Revenge of the Fallen could have a record-setting opening. The data provided to the site concluded that RotF is looking to equal the five-day opening box office take of The Dark Knight, last year's biggest movie and the second-highest grossing film of all-time. The Dark Knight made $203 million dollars domestically in its first five days of release last July before going on to end its run with $533 million. Comparatively, the first Transformers opened on Tuesday, July 2, 2007 with $8m in ticket sales and had made $84m before entering the weekend (the July 4th holiday fell on Wednesday that year.)
Could Revenge of the Fallen smash the current largest Wednesday opening record (2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with $44m) and the record for five-day gross (Spider-Man 2's $152m take)? It's certainly within the picture's hype range to take both of these records.

I said it a few weeks ago to a friend, I think this will be the biggest release movie ever and probably well deserved.
