Karl Malden passes away
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Actor Karl Malden has died of natural causes at the age of 97. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mona, two daughters, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Malden worked as an actor for both television, theater and film for seven decades, with his last credited performance as a priest in an episode of The West Wing nine years ago. He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Performance in the 1952 adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire for director Elia Kazan and later an Emmy for his work in a 1984 made-for-television movie, Fatal Vision. He was also an active supporter of his profession by serving on the boards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Screen Actors Guild and then serving as the Academy's president for the years 1989 to 1991. In 2003 Malden was awarded with the Screen Actors' Guild's Life Achievement Award for his work in entertainment as well as his many humanitarian accomplishments.
Malden's best remembered role will likely be as Detective Mike Stone in The Streets of San Francisco, a 1970s police drama that ran for five seasons. Partnered with a young Michael Douglas, the two cops chased down criminals and put the city of San Francisco front and center with viewers around the world. Usually cast in a supporting role for the movie's leading man, Malden's other memorable roles include Birdman of Alcatraz, On the Waterfront, The Cincinatti Kid, Gypsy, Patton, Meteor and Nuts.
