A $40+ million dollar second weekend is nothing to slouch about. Box Office Mojo says that TF2's second weekend gross was down 61% from last weekend's $100m+ gross but that's a pretty decent dropoff for a film that's been savagely reviewed by most of the paper and online critics. A 70% dropoff would equal failure. The third weekend will show whether the film will limp to $300m and the same b.o. as the first TF film or if it can push to $400m. Internationally the b.o. for TF2 is up over the first one.

Transformers 2 beats Ice Age 3
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, July 6, 2009
Yesterday the preliminary returns from the weekend box office had Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Ice Age 3 tied for first spot with each sequel grossing an estimated $42.5 million dollars. Now we have the final actuals and it turns out that Transformers took in about $600,000 more than Ice Age, giving the Paramount/DreamWorks film its second consecutive weekend at the top spot.
Based on the receipt totals sent in by theaters Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took in $42,320,877 dollars from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs made $41,690,382. Bear in mind that Transformers played on 135 more screens than Ice Age which had the higher per screen gross ($10,171 across 4,099 screens versus Transformers' $9,995 across 4,234 screens.)
i liked the first film A LOT better. its explosions galore and too much of everything... plus it didnt need the "Ball" scene or Skids and Mudflap either nuff' said

So the big picture, to me anyway, is that Transformers may be running out of steam faster than expected? Big pop, huge premier breaking records then the ride slows and brings you back to the station.
