Corona's creator on Attack of the Show

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, August 20, 2009

I was asked to be a guest on today's Attack of the Show program on G4 Tech TV to discuss the release of the first Avatar trailer. Host Kevin Pereira and producer Sean Jordan were very cool and nice and I felt that I did an OK job of answering Kevin's questions about the movie and also offering my thoughts on what I saw. However, now that I've seen what I look like on TV I'll be starting a diet and doing a lot of trips to the gym. I wish James Cameron could make me a 20 pounds lighter avatar of myself with his computer technology.

Anyway, I thought that it might be interesting to show you the segment and for you to also see what the guy who writes the content for Coming Attractions looks like. And now I will never watch this video again.

Awesome dude! Well done. I hope they use you again. Watching oneself on the tube is always tough. We see things that not everyone does. It will get easier over time and you won't need all those "trips to the gym". You did a fantastic job.

Awesome job, Pat! You laid that shit down, yo!! I feel the same way about Avatar though, that trailer did nothing for me and its nice to see that people are having the same reaction that I did.

I am sure we will get your ass back on Chaotic Radio at some point and that way, you can cuss and call that guy who interviewed you a noob!

I keep my standards low, that way im never dissapointed

I feel like I know a celebrity!! :D Great job, Pat. That would be awesome if you could become a regular guest on Attack of the Show...

Well done. I watched the trailer before seeing your review and didn't get any type of story from it, just like you said. I didn't even make the connection that the guy in the wheelchair became one of those blue guys. I look forward to what will be revealed later on, though.

And good for you! You appeared calm, confident and I like your choice of going business casual. You came off as interesting and friendly. Good times!

"When the Net wasn't strong enough to contain him, Sauriol broke through to new victories, new victims, new killing grounds... and revitalized the old technology as only a Canuckian can..."

Congrats, bunkie!

Good Lord, I just watched the trailer -- what a piece of yawn. Cool soldierbots and SF war elements, but the ELFQUEST aliens look more human than anything on DEEP SPACE 9's $5-latex-prosthetics budget -- and did I see right that they have the same physiology, right down to five toes on each humanoid foot?!

And don't get me started on the "end it with a kiss" moment. Did Cameron's balls go down with the Titanic?

Great interview, Patrick! As bad as you think you look on camera, you aren't as scruffy looking as Devin from Chud, and he's been on AotS many times now (and usually pretty fun to watch). Maybe you should grow a big beard for next time.

Anyway, I think I'm in the minority here of really liking the Avatar trailer. I didn't mind that there wasn't any story in there because it is a teaser trailer with actual footage in it. There are so many times when we get a teaser that's only a bit of text or a logo. I'm sure we'll get a full trailer for Avatar in a couple months that actually shows some of the story.

How is it you came to be interviewed, Patrick? Did they seek you out? Were you chosen from a talent pool of potential movie news site commentators? Was the occult involved in anyway, and, if not, do you feel, dueo to your strong personal convictions, the wish to stress that your appearance in no way endorses a belief in the occult?

* * *

I think it's pretty common for a movie of this type to release a teaser trailer that tells no story. Attack of the Clones did it. Where the Wild Things Are did it. Other movies have, too, but no other specific examples come to mind at the moment. (Didn't The Abyss do something similar? I suppose Watchmen's trailer did.) With Attack of the Clones and Where the Wild Things Are, perhaps, there was less of a reason to tell a story. The former has the advantage of being part of a larger story everyone already knows, and the latter has the advantage of being an adaptation of a book many people have read. I suppose it's a question of whether or not Avatar's trailer piqued curiosity. It provoked discussion, obviously, but I'm not sure how curious it made the people outside the know to learn more about the movie. (Most of us here already know quite a bit about it, I would guess.)

I agree with Strider that it was nice to get some actual footage, instead of a string of sentences telling us our minds would be blown.

I was unexcited by the trailer. I'll go see the movie. I see lots of 'em. Might as well see this one, too.

I just remember a few years back when I heard that there was going to be a new trailer for Terminator 3 attached to some movie....I forget which one it was now. I was very disappointed to discover that it was just a teaser trailer showing the WB logo melting into a puddle and reforming into a T3 logo. It's not the only teaser to ever to merely show a logo, but it's the example that sticks in my head.

Nice one, Pat! Came across as very honest in the interview. When he posed that softball at the end seeing if you would put some optimism from the mixed reactions after Avatar Day, you still pronounced the skepticism that quite a lot of us are feeling.

Very cool. Hope you get invited back to debate future movies on AotS more often.

Answers for Goiter:

The producer of AOTS started to follow me recently. Yesterday I woke up and saw the AVATAR trailer. While I was getting the content on my site I was also participating in a conversation on Twitter between the movie webmasters about the trailer. I didn't like it and I was voicing my criticism. I guess the producer liked what I was saying and asked me if I wanted to come on the show and offer my opinion, plus educate the audience about what the story is supposed to be.

As for my belief in the occult, that is why I chose to wear the shirt that I did.

The AOTS crew seemed to like it. They were apologizing for the short space of time that the segment had but I know it's live TV and they're got a lot of stuff to show every day. I think the door is open for me coming back but we'll see. It was just cool for me to get on AOTS as I watch the show.

Next time, no horizontally striped shirt.

No matter where you go, there you are.

I want to edit my above post read "due" and not "dueo," but I am getting an odd, never-before-seen "access denied" notification.

(I was making a rather lame, unprovoked reference to Jacko's "Thriller" disclaimer with the occult comment, if anyone cares. I say this knowing full well that no one who didn't already recognize it as a reference to Jacko's "Thriller" disclaimer would care, and that even those who might have recognized it likely wouldn't care.)

They say horizontally striped shirts accentuate the breasts.

Patrick, a friendly advice: get your eyes on some 3D footage right this instance. And I mean now. As for the story thing, I honestly don't understand all the criticism it's getting. What part of "teaser" from "teaser trailer" didn't people get?

That aggregious striped shirt actually made me register instead of lurk.

Repeat after me, "I will not wear striped shirts or cotton jersey collars on tv." If you do, I'm going to make your wife burn it.. Long-sleeved tees with no collars/hoods or a real shirt with a collar would have looked crisper. Given that the Loop graphics are in red, I would have worn a grey-green or grey-teal shirt to make the most of it - not straight green or it would have looked like Christmas. The complimentary colours would have popped and worked with your pale skin tone in tv lights.

Don't make me style you.

I have noticed in these talkback-y threads that there are quite a few new people out here. Come on into the forums, we don't bite!! Goiter might throw a wall of words at you, or you may get a once in a lifetime opportunity to help mend Jakester's broken heart, but come by. It's comfy in there!
