Obama axes Moon missions, aims for pro-commercial "paradigm shift"

Posted by Space Tycoon on Thursday, January 28, 2010

Good news. Let the private sector take up the slack and achieve new triumphs in space.

This is not unexpected, really. No president has been behind NASA for space exploration in a long time. It's one of those ideally nice things, but truely does not serv a practical (aka profitable) purpose.

And in a free market, money talks and bullshit walks.

So am I sad to see them drop it? Yes.
Do I think it's the wrong this to do (practically)? Not so sure.

Face it, our new governments are Verizon, Time Warner, GE, Disney, and Fox. They will end up funding space "exploration" to their own ends. Same thing with cell phones, Ipods, cars, blue ray, and everyhting else we gobble up.

No, I don't spellcheck.

I think NASA has to lead the way. The only people who can take the risk, breach the barriers and actually build MoonBase 1 are NASA or an international governmental/state alliance.

Then commercial concerns will make MoonBase v2, 3, 4 etc. cheaper and faster.

And people think I'm the socialist around here...

Honestly I think this is a wise move. Constellation was such a flawed concept from the start, little more than Apollo (itself a flawed approach) on steroids. If it had been carried to it's conclusion, it would have made the Shuttle program look like a model of efficiency by comparison.

NASA obviously has a role to play in the exploration and development of space. NASA should stick to the things it does really well, such as operating scientific probes, earth observation, space telescopes, and pushing the boundaries of aerospace research. Not holding a monopoly on near-earth space activity. No other transportation sector is so heavily dominated by the federal government. No other frontier was pushed back in this way. Profit--or self-interest, if you will-- drove our ancestors to cross the oceans. This is the new ocean.

And no other country is even close to catching up to the US in space, not Russia, not China, and certainly not India. Obama is making the right move here, as a space enthusiast and a libertarian I fully support it.

I want to fly an orbital space flight before I die. I suppose commercial enterprises are the way to go for that. However, I'm extremely disappointed that I won't get to watch HD lunar landings within the next ten years.

Guess what? I got a fever. And the only prescription . . . is more cowbell!

That's one helluva rocket!

SRB's would have increased efficiency and lowered costs, for sure. But what of their safety/environmental record? Not a fan, myself.... I always liked the idea of a dual system, an air-launched rocketplane dropped from a high-altitude jet. You get the best of both worlds--safety and reusability.

I understand that back in the very early days of the American space program, there were two main schools of thought about what would be the best way to launch America's astronauts: riding on the top of ballistic missiles, which were a relatively simple, proven technology; or using reusable rocketplanes dropped from B-52 bombers, like the X-15, only scaled up for orbital flight.

The Russians helped make that decision for Washington. Couldn't appear to be falling behind the Soviets. Wings amd wheels would have to wait for the Shuttle--but even that fell widely short of true reusable low-cost access to space. Again, politics and wide-eyed enthusiasm were to blame.

You will probably always need big dumb boosters for the heavy-lift payloads. It would be nice if they were reusable. But I would settle for a private company launching paylods for a fraction of the current rate.

In the long run, I look forward to the day when sizeable, affordable, reusable rocketplanes will be launched from high altitudes into orbit, from enormous aircraft dedicated soley to that purpose.

Yeah, it'll take time, and we will be entering middle-age or later when it happens. But I think we've run the old paradigm into the ground. Time for fresh thinking.

To take pre-fabricated parts and panels up to the space-dock, where people floating about in spacesuits can weld them together.

What is the name of that system that blasts highly reflective carriers with lasers to push them skyward???

On the subject of the Burj-Al-Arab and just about everything else new and shiny in that part of the world, let us not kid ourselves the Arabs had anything to do with it beyond the "I wonder if we can build......" stage.

Architecture, structure, design and project management by Brits.
Funded (in a roundabout way) by US and Far East banks.
Built by Pakistani slave labour.
Steel and glass by the US and Europe.
Engineering suopply and fit out by the US and Europe
Light switches, door handles and all mod cons by China and Taiwan.
