Now I know why my pet turtle liked slugs and snails so much (his favorite). They eat his second favorite food, earthworms, thereby turning themselves into the turtle's equivalent of a turducken.

Does anyone else find those piles of purchase orders for giant snails in Jakester's house a little strange?

As an aside, if anyone uses Rapidshare for downloading and hasn't been using it recently, it's currently only requiring a 10 second wait to dl with no waiting requirement in between dl's. I thought at first it must be some July 4th weekend special, but as of last night it was still working (over the weekend it didn't require any waiting prior to dl plus you could dl multiple files at the same time, i.e. the equivalent of their paid service).

RapidShare tried to change its format about a year ago so that you didn't extend your paid account for a specific period of time, but instead set up system of "Rapids," which were points whose value was more-or-less undefined.  It was supposed to be affected by the amount of downloading you were doing, but it didn't keep a visible record of how much you were downloading, or how much more you could download before running out of Rapids.  There was some vague language saying your Rapids might/would eventually expire at some unannounced time if you didn't use them up in a timely fashion.  It was all pretty confusing.

It reminded me of the modern slot machines that don't take coins and don't show you the cash value of your remaining credit.  Instead, you put money on a card, insert it into the slot, and are shown a number of points whose value you can guess at first by dividing the number of points credited to you by the cash value you know to be on your card.  After a little while playing, it gets harder to keep track of this.

That kind of sucks. How was it set up before? Wasn't the Rapidshare pro-account basically a paid service that let you download as many files as you wanted without having to wait between downloads (for the duration of the service period you paid for, of course)? Has this changed with the introduction of these "Rapids"? I had no idea that this was going on.

Can somebody explain the point of Torchwood to me? Saw the first few episodes, pretty much zoned out and got bored with it. Didn't like the characters when they showed up in Full Who. Can't get excited over Miracle Day.

Am I missing something and should really go back and try again?

Yes. The more you paid, the longer you had the service. You also got bigger and bigger discounts the more you paid, the way you do with lots of services. By this I mean that if you paid for a full year all at once, it was cheaper than paying for a year's service month by month.

I watched the first few episodes but I only liked Captain Jack. I wanted the rest of them to jump off a very tall bridge. I stopped watching as well.

For some reason, all of these videos are showing up as a black square for me.  I think my office just started blocking video without telling me.  I also tried to watch a video on You Tube this morning and nothing happened.  Dammit!

The first few episodes tried way too hard to be "edgy." There were some good episodes in the first series like "Countrycide" and "Random Shoes," but a lot of it is clunky. Series 2 gets better and there are more good episodes than bad. Plus, we get Spike.

Series 3 - "Children of Earth" should rock your wold. It is very, very good.

On this same note, can someone explain Babylon5 to me? Based on all the crazy internet love for the show, I watched the first season. And well, yeah, I haven't watched any more. I was pretty much stunned, not only that everybody and their fucking dog is head over heels over this show, but that even if it did get better, how anyone managed to stick with it beyond the first season. Every single episode was deplorably laughable. To keep my sanity, I'm maintaining the theory that people started watching midstream much, much later in the show's run.

B5 has a nice dramatic arc, but it suffers from budgetary constraints. The space station often doesn't feel as lived in or as busy as it should. Even so, I found watching the 5 seasons to be a worthwhile endeavour. I thought the first half of the first season was pretty rough, yes, but it grew on me. I do not have the slavish love for JMS that a lot of people do, though.

Good ol' Straczynski.  He's the greatest comic book writer OF ALL TIME!

I watched a Babylon 5 TV movie a few years ago where a woman went into some kind of virtual reality console to man her ship's weapons.  She was basically floating there, punching and kicking the air.  The ship responded to these "commands" by firing its weapons.  It made me laugh out loud.

That was Legend of the Rangers.  We don't like to talk about that.

Quasar, I'm probably wasting my breath (finger energy?), but you should keep going.  Season 1 is a little rough around the edges, but the series improves each year.  Did you make it to the very last episode of season 1?  You should at least tune in to see what happens to Garibaldi.

That happened and we all let it happen.

I borrowed the first season of B5 from a library once.  I watched about five minutes of one episode, then returned it.  When Quasar told me he was going to try watching the show, I suggested he start with season two.
