Return Of The Jedi

It's on TV right now. It really does seem weak after Empire, which was on last week.

It's a great movie. I'd argue the last 45 mins of Jedi are as good as anything in Empire.

By the way, I hate watching those movies on tv with commercials. The OT films all have a great rhythm to them, and when you break it up a great deal of the effect is lost.

Not all movies play that way. They show Shawshank Rdemption about once a day on TNT, and it plays just fine with commercials.

Ford comes across a little tired and spiritless for a lot of the movie. They only place where it doesn't feel like he's phoning it in to me is while they're on Tatooine.

I remember getting really annoyed as a kid when Leia gets separated from the group. The gang stays split up for most of Empire, then they finally get back together, then they're split up again. I understand why, I think (we get Luke/Leia time in ANH and Han/Leia time in Empire, so Lucas probably wanted us to get some Luke/Han time to even things out, because that's just the way Lucas is), but as a kid, it sucked to have them all back together for such a short time. It doesn't bother me as much now.

I think the opening and closing of Jedi work a lot better than the middle, though I do really like bits in the middle. I like Yoda's death scene.

The Rebellion's a little too clean in Jedi. Everything's all sterile and immaculate. Even the camouflage the rebels wear when they head down to Endor looks all nice and cleaned and pressed. Mon Mothma and Ackbar look like they just emerged from three hour baths. Especially Ackbar, considering he's the color of a cooked lobster.

I know the old justification for why the Rebellion looks so free from grime and wear in Jedi. They're finally organized and well-funded enough to take down the Empire. That's what we're told, anyway. Maybe so. I just miss how worn the Rebellion's stuff looked in ANH and Empire. They clean up nice at the end of ANH for the medal ceremony, but that's for a medal ceremony. When they're fighting the good fight, it's a different matter. The Hoth base looks pretty impromptu, despite all the wires and technology around. Looks like they carved that shit out of the snow in a hurry.

Man, there were some great sets and matte paintings in those movies.

The sets in Empire are what sets it apart from other good/great films. They are unbelievably great. The carbon freezing chamber is unreal.

I guess the weaknesses of the prequels start to bleed into Jedi.  There are a few things that feel thrown together like Lucas was trying to clear up his own mess.  The Luke/Leia sister thing feels forced.

Taking a shiny golden metal robot and a wheel based robot into a stealth mission in a forest is just silly.

The cutting between multiple climaxes is evident here.

The space battle is great but ruined by too much cutting away.  The explosions look a bit ropey in it now and appear off.

The Ewoks are still annoying and far too cutesy.  Chewies Tarzan cry is not funny.

There is also too much Force-related making up of shit.

The Emperor is particularly guilty of this.  'He will join us, I have foreseen it.' etc. etc.  OK, you have foreseen it, we'll that's OK then, we will make policy based on your fucking visions shall we?

And about this 'Foreseen' thingy....  if you are so fucking psychic why don't you foresee what is going to happen to you in about 20 minutes Champ??

Also, back to Lucas mess cleaning.  The whole Obi-Wan/Luke convo on Dagobah strikes me as being required because when he made Star Wars he had no idea Vader would be Luke's father.

I really love the whole tatooine section of RotJ.

The movie itself is one of my earliest memories (it's very hazy, i was tiny, but it's there) but several elements from the beginning really lodged into my brain. I love Jabba's lair, the rancor (I Don't really remember it too well, but it must have terrified me), Luke's Jedi outfit, pirate ships in the sand (I could watch a whole movie about that bit, had hoped that's what John Carter would be), and specifically (I imagine this is a bit odd) how Leia's voice sounded while dressed as a bounty hunter.

The rest of the movie is cool too. Personally I like the Ewoks, but eh, to each there own.

My first memory as a human is going with my parents to see Jedi.

My first memory as a human being is of being in the theater for the theatrical rerelease of Empire. The bright white of the Hoth scenes really lit up the audience.

Standing in ticket line for Jedi in South Carolina, embarrassing my mother by peeing in a circle while standing in the ticket line (the line wrapped around the theater), being completely amazed by the movie, and going with my family immediately after it to pick up some Jedi drinking glasses from Burger King was another early memory. I remember pretty big chunks of the day, so it stands out. Most of my earliest memories are short and scattered. Memories from that day aren't.

The summer of '83 really left an impression on me. I remember going to Chuck E. Cheese's a couple times. I remember living on Otter Pops, Capri-Sun, and hot sauce-enhanced oyster stew. I remember going to the theater to see Jaws 3-D, Return of the Jedi, Mr. Mom, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, National Lampoon's Vacation, Superman III, and Spacehunter. My step-siblings stayed with us that summer. They were a bit older. They weren't entertained by much. It was movies or bust, really. Worked for me.

I'm fine with the Ewoks. There's a handful of cutesy moments, but I like that they're fierce little fuckers, and I like that the one Ewok keeps trying to wake up his dead buddy.

That one ewok hits himself in the face with his sling. He's so dumb, it's adorable!

I wanted my own pet Ewok when I was a kid.  I just found that they really took me out of the movie watching it now.

Don't be surprised if neglet pounces on this. (I think you may have given her license with a recent correction. On the other hand, it may not have been you. My memory is sucky.)

Naw, I always assume if Spacey does it, it's because he wants to be spanked.

The Wookies didn't get enough screen time in ROTS.  Get the feeling they were forced in to make up for the Ewoks.

Welcome to the Club Spacey! You'll find that things will ache more and hair will grow in weird places. Sleep will evade you and you will gain weight by looking at food.

Enjoy!

I already have weekly headaches, neckaches, lower back pain...

Sir Dickie Longjohnson is still workin' at full capacity, fortunately.  I thank a largely vegetarian diet for that.

Yeah, but it's easier than saying "I eat mostly vegetarian food items, except for a few items that wouldn't be considered vegetarian."

Other half = just doesn't really like red meat (but does mince, but not beef burgers) and doesn't like any food that looks like it ever had a face.  So fish goujons are OK, but whole pan fried red snapper is out.  Eats all chicken breasts, but not pork chops.

I think she's just confused.

Meat is delicious.

Bacon destroys all vegetarian resistance.
