April 7, 2009 - Star Trek / Wrath of Khan screening turns out to be premiere of new movie
Scooped on Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Last night there was supposed to be a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in Austin, Texas as the Alamo Drafthouse. On hand to show ten minutes of footage from the new Star Trek movie were writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman and producer Damon Lindelof.
The show started. Shortly after the credits were over the print of Khan started to look tattered and worn and then it appeared that the film got stuck and burned through, leaving the audience staring at a white screen. Booing came forth from the disgruntled viewers.
After a brief moment when the owner of the Drafthouse ran up on stage and apologized for the problem, the two Trek writers came on stage to gain some time for repairs to the print. And then a mysterious figure in a trenchcoat and hat came up on stage.
It was Leonard Nimoy, and after asking the audience if they wanted to watch the new Star Trek movie (answer: a thunderous yes), the real show began.
Austin, Texas turned out to be the surprise world premiere of the new Star Trek movie.
Reviews are starting to show up across the web and the early ones paint the movie in a positive light. One of these is from Ain't It Cool's Quint while another is by a CHUD reader that attended the screening. Also, Orci and Kurtzman told the Austin audience that they were going to be reading the internet feedback from the screening as they approach crafting the story for the sequel.
