July 26, 2009 - Iron Man 2 / Comic-Con panel
Scooped on Sunday, July 26, 2009
Yesterday at the 2009 Comic-Con Iron Man 2 panel director Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell came to say hello to 6,000 screaming fans. Many outlets that attended the standing-room only event say that what transpired in that room was among the highlights of this year's con. The biggest event was the surprise unveil of a sizzle reel of selected scenes from the upcoming sequel that brought the house down. In all the reel was shown three times and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
The Iron Man 2 footage contained the public's first look at the War Machine armor, the modified Iron Man Mark II suit that James Rhodes will wear at some point in the film. In the scene previewed at the con, Rhodes (played by Cheadle) is shown a selection of weapons by Justin Hammer (Rockwell). After Rockwell asks him which one he wants, Rhodey replies, "All of them." The next image seen is of the War Machine armor in operation, blasting away with all of its weaponry.
Other scenes in the reel included a look at Mickey Rourke's Whiplash in attack mode, his electric tendrils cascading deadly energy at a downed Tony Stark at the race track; Rhodes taking the stand at senate hearings concerning the Iron Man armor; Downey's Stark defending the position that he should be the sole owner of the Iron Man technology and Garry Shandling's senator getting angry at Stark refusing to concede his position; and SHIELD commander Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) asking the armored Tony Stark to please get out of the donut sign affixed to the top of a donut shop.
As per Comic-Con policy no material from the movie can be recorded but video of the panel has gone up on YouTube such as this three-part collection uploaded by BucketReviews:
