March 1, 2012 - SpongeBob Squarepants Movie 2 / project announced

Viacom President and CEO Philippe Dauman revealed that Paramount Pictures is making a second SpongeBob Squarepants animated movie. "We will be releasing a SpongeBob movie at the end of 2014, which will serve to start off or be one of our films that starts off our new animation effort," Dauman told investors.

Since Paramount and 'toon producer DreamWorks Animation announced plans to formally separate, the question has been up in the air as to what Paramount would do to plug its animation hole. A second SpongeBob Squarepants film would serve to be a partial solution to that problem.

The first SpongeBob film was released in 2004. It grossed $85 million dollars domestic.
