October 20, 2008 - Haunted
Scooped on Tuesday, October 21, 2008
The film rights to Chuck Palahniuk's novel Haunted have been bought by New School Media, a brand new production company as well as management firm created by former ICM agent Brian Levy. Belgian filmmaker Koen Mortier has been selected to adapt Palahniuk's book into a screenplay as well as direct the film.
Palahniuk's book is about 17 would-be writers who are picked by an individual named Mr. Whittier and given an invitation to participate in an exclusive writers retreat. Cut off from civilization, with each person locked in their own room and given limited food, liquid and creature comforts so they can focus on their task at hand, Whittier informs the scribes that they have three months to produce a story. After a short time has passed several of the writers come to think that they could simply sell their true account of taking part in such a bizarre event and could raise the drama by sabotaging one of their provisions. However, things go awry and soon all of the participants are facing the serious threat of starvation, dehydration, freezing to death and sickness. Each writer has a tale to tell and is given a chapter to recount the most traumatic or shocking event that has happened to them. Palahniuk's infamous short story "Guts" makes up one of the chapters in Haunted.
