Silent Running

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Sunday, May 5, 2013

So I was looking forward to this as it is spoken about reverently by sci-if fans. Mark Kermode says it is better than 2001.

Erm.... I thought it was a strange little film and really didn't rate it.

I dug it when I watched it. Haven't seen it since I was a preteen. Downloaded it a few years ago to watch it again. I'll let you know if I still dig it if I ever get a chance to rewatch it.

We'll dig this thread up annually on Cinco de Mayo to remind you that you still haven't re-watched it.

Silent Running is a flawed gem.  It is by no means perfect, even when you take the period into account.  But I watch it from time to time, if only to remind me that there was a time when not every sf movie had to end in a high tech bloodbath.

I love SILENT RUNNING. It formed one of my dearest movie memories as a kid: watching the surviving drone watering the garden all alone in space, with a sad Joan Baez song over the imagery. It utterly destroyed me. I emphasized with Freeman Lowell, and I could relate to him killing all his friends and running away to save the last forests left anywhere in the universe.

Aside from that, it also shows the ingenuity of director Douglas Trumball. He shot all the Valley Forge interior scenes onboard a decommissioned US Navy battleship, and it looks totally appropriate for what a space lugger's insides would look like. The new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA pulled the same trick a couple of times, shooting inside BC Ferries boats.

Growing up as a kid in the 70s, the sci-fi movies that were coming out before STAR WARS, the SILENT RUNNINGs, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, SOYLENT GREEN, PHASE IV, THE OMEGA MAN, all of those were heady, distopic science fiction that often ended on a downer. But they were elegant in their craftsmanship and strove to be something bigger than leading men fighting mutants or aliens. I wish that there were more sci-fi movies like those being made nowadays, but the closest that Hollywood can seem to get is PROMETHEUS.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Quasar must be asleep. If he were awake, he would have called Spacey an ass-kisser by now.

Soylent Green and Omega Man I dig.  Maybe I just had too high hopes for this film after all I had heard.

I can see how people speak highly of Huey, Louey and Duey as they do manage to be....... human??

Whatever happened to Bryan Singer remaking that?

I was going to say "The same thing that happened to Bryan Singer remaking Battlestar Galactica," in that it didn't get done. But of course BSG got remade by someone else. So I won't say that.

Dalty sure is spending a long time at IMDb. He must have stayed there overnight. I bet they have rooms for £200 a person.

Dalty, shame on you.

Here I was about to make a post about how lame and trite 99% of all sci-fi tv and films are...

But then you, my strapping young apprentice, reference one of my favorite films all time, and suddenly my interest is peaked. You are a marketing genius.
