This is so MASSIVE it can't possibly be true??

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Lucasfilm has been purchased.

By Disney.

For $4 Billion.

And announced Star Wars Episode VII for 2015.

This has to be some kind of epic practical joke right? This is too massive to actually happen?

And probably with no Fox fanfare at the beginning of it.

And they'll probably stick Donald and Spidey in it too.

Wonder if they would ever pay Fox just for the music, to play it over that fireworks/castle zoomy thing they open their movies with.

I agree with Omi, if they can do the same type of job for Star Wars that they did for Marvel, let them have at it.

And when they bought Pixar they promoted a load of Pixar creatives up high within Disney rather than gut Pixar.

I know it's a business and at the end of the day money talks, but if I had to choose a studio for this then it would be Disney.

And imagine "Star Wars Kingdom" at Walt Disney World in Florida in 2018???

I still think I'd rather there never be any more Star Wars movies.

"If you don't wanna watch 'em, then don't watch 'em, Goits."

Ha. I hate myself too much not to watch them.

"They're gonna happen whether you want them to or not."

I know. I've resigned myself to this. Doesn't make me feel any better about it.

"And besides, maybe they'll be good. Don't be too hasty to judge."

I'm sure they'll be fine. They may even be great. Even so, I can't see myself ever being able to see more Star Wars without having conflicting feelings about the experience. If there's an opening crawl, if there are familiar actors, or if the old John Williams score remains, it's going to be hard for me not to feel somewhat icky about it.

Whenever Williams would throw in shades of the Imperial March or other OT themes, it would take me out of the prequels and made me feel like I was being aggressively manipulated than usual. (Yes, the prequels did a good enough job taking me out of the prequels.) Whenever other artists have come in and built on old Williams scores (Superman Returns, Harry Potter sequels, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire) it's felt hollow and strange to me.

I'm usually pretty good at expressing myself, explaining why I feel the way I feel, and applying reasonably sound logic to my argumentation, but it's different with Star Wars. I wish there were some way for me to distance myself from all this and not feel put off by it. I'll work on it. Don't know that I'll make much progress. I may be broken. The prequels may have broken me. They're like tuberculosis. I've been to the sanatorium and I've been released, but I'll never not be infected.

Seriously. I'm a bona fide tuberculosis infectee.

I don't want to begrudge others their potential enjoyment of the new movies. I hope they love them. That said, I wish cinematic Star Wars would stop.

"Fine, you whiny baby. You goddam entitled motherfucker. It's not like the new Star Wars movies are all about you. Just pretend like they don't exist."

Can't. Sorry. I suck, and I hate myself.

 From Dark Horizons...

Fox Still Owns The Original "Star Wars"

Ready for the first wrinkle in the Disney-Lucasfilm deal?

While Disney will own and release future films in the "Star Wars" series, the deal does NOT include the distribution rights to the pre-existing "Star Wars" films.

Those rights remain with 20th Century Fox. In fact, Fox owns distribution rights to the original 1977 "Star Wars" film in perpetuity in all media worldwide.

It also has theatrical, nontheatrical and home video rights worldwide to the other five films in the series through May 2020.

This means Disney can't issue a 'complete saga' set unless a deal with Fox is made. It also means fan hopes for quality Blu-ray editions of the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy are highly unlikely.

Fox also plans to still re-release the 3D versions of "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" next Fall.

I'm excited about the prospect of new films. The biggest problem with SW has now been removed.

I'm a teeny weeny bit wary of where they can take the story here, but there are 3 reasons to be optimistic. 1). Lucas is out of the picture. 2). They are scrapping the awful EU as it relates to films. 3). Fresh blood on the creative side.

I'm choosing to be Switzerland on this and remain neutral.  Basically, I'm not going to convict Disney guilty of ruining SW until they actually ruin SW.  I also don't want to praise them for making it better until they do.  From my point of view, the deal is done, nothing we can do about it.  The ball is now in Disney's court and we are all waiting for them to either hit a blooper back at us or slam a homerun back in our face.  Personally, I would love to see them hit a homerun with this, but I don't want to get my hopes up, so I am trying to be caustiously optimistic.

I'm rooting for not getting a homerun slammed into my face.

I'm indifferent to its being Disney that's taking up the reins. Disney's a studio full of capable people. The company's output ranges from fantastic to dreadful. There are strokes of genius. There are misfires. This is consistent with most companies.

There are a lot of people out there saying, "If it had to be somebody, I'm glad it was Disney." There are others saying, "I wish it had been anybody but Disney."

I respect Dr. Ake's let's-wait-and-see position more than I respect the position of those cheering and jeering.

It's just that I really, really don't want more Star Wars. I'm gonna have to spend money on that shit. Because I'm a lower-than-low consumer who could be using the few pennies he manages to earn to help the needy.

msunyata put an editorial on the front page. If you haven't gone there to heckle him, you should. Go ahead and be mean as you please. It's good for his soul.

Is this your way of saying that you need to support yourself? Or are there needier people than you out there that you really have a desire to help?

So is there no middle ground here? Are the only two possibilities that Disney will either fail miserably or deliver a kick-ass Episode VII? What if it turns out to be a decent movie that's better than the prequels, but doesn't match any part of the OT? Will that still count as a failure?

How bad can Disney do, really? What, are they gonna introduce some goofy, annoying, borderline racist caricature of a character with floppy ears and have him be involved in the creation of the Empire?

You really only need to see the first six seconds.

Again, I feel I should make it clear that I'm sure the next trilogy will be just fine.

It could be excellent, decent, middling, poor, or absolutely terrible. I'm sure I'll watch the damned things.

Regardless of their quality, I'll wind up treating them like laundry. Laundry's a necessary burden. (It's not much of a burden, as far as burdens go, but I'm a pampered asshole living in the first world, so it's just enough of one for it to be annoying. We were recently demoted, I guess. We still seem to live like we're first-worlders, though. I'm sure third-worlders would love to have such a burden. Well, I'm not sure. Don't want to go assuming what they'd want and not want or need and not need. That's how missionaries get started.) I never do laundry cheerily. I usually put it off for as long as I have to. Eventually, though, it's gotta get done.

Look at Hayden act there where some good direction might have really helped, and see even McGregor struggle with the quality of the script

I read a headline somewhere that claimed Lucas donating the four billion to education. Didn't click on the article link to see any details.

Will Leia be added to the Disney Princess lineup?

I love how Obi Wan tells Anakin that only a Sith deals in absolutes and then a few minutes later Obi Wan calls Palpatine evil.

Everyone appears to be able to just hop around the outer rim, from system to system, in about 6 minutes flat in act III as well.

There are just so many things wrong that seem like they could have easily been fixed by a couple of script doctoring sessions and a second set of eyes on the editing.

It's funnier before then. It's funny as he's saying it, since "only" is an absolute.
