Stuff Batman vs Superman SHOULD do?

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Could be epic, could make a few simple mistakes and end up really disappointing, or really piss people off. I think the lukewarm response to parts of Man Of Steel coupled with cynicism over Affleck's casting mean it starts with an uphill struggle.

So what do you reckon they should do in the film, with characters, plot points and story direction to keep it on track?

They should just can it--by which I don't mean get it in the can.

I disagree.  I think it needs work, but it might be the right thing to do vs the Marvel machine.

I've always found it hard to reconcile the tone of the two comics. Batman is always so dark, especially as portrayed in the Nolan films, and Superman seems more of an optimist. I'm not sure how you combine the two without getting the tone wildly out of whack.

Granted, I haven't seen "Man of Steel" yet, so I really have no idea what direction they might take it.

Man of Steel gets pretty dark.

So do the comics, a lot of the time. Superman's an optimist, sure, but they often try to underline his optimism by surrounding him with bleakness. He's pretty moody these days--or at least he was before the New 52. Has been since Byrne's post-Crisis reboot, really. I haven't had the money to buy comics for a couple years, so I don't know how he's being portrayed these days.

I was going to post more thoughts on Bats/Supes tone, yadda yadda, but then I realized this film registered only about 10% on my Give-a-shit-o-meter.

Batman is kind of a closet optimist. He believes Gotham can be improved.

So I think they need to make it not about Batman.  Make it about Superman as a true Man Of Steel sequel but with Bats as a supporting character who is important to drive the narrative.

Show him doing some detective work.  Maybe around tracking down Supes and his identity.

They must make sure they don't bottle it and ignore MoS - particularly the destruction of large parts of Metropolis and what Clark did to Zod.  Front up to it and use it to propel things forward.

If Lex is in this, make him Lex-Corp / shady industrialist Lex.  Not scamming comedy Lex.

And don't have Supes and Bats actually get into a fist fight.  It's fucking stupid.  Whenever they do this is the comics there is always some hilariously contrived attempt to even up the odds but it is always ridiculous.  Supes could flick Bats and Bats wouldn't land again until Bludhaven so just leave it.

If you don't think Bats can challenge Supes in a fight, why bother having Luthor as a villain? Isn't Luthor essentially the evil version of Bruce Wayne?

The old Brain vs Brawn thing?

I always thought that part of the challenge with Luthor was also that they couldn't actually pin anything on him.  They knew he was dodgy, but he was also teflon!!!

Luthor's got that bald head that everything slides off of. Wayne's too vain to give up the hair.

I'd like to see Wayne and Luthor facing up in the boardroom too.

I want Luthor to have a nice, thick head of red hair at the beginning. Throughout the movie, whenever Superman does something to foil one of Luthor's plans, I want Luthor to say, "Oh, you SUPERMAN!" and tear out a little bit of his hair. I want him to have one final hair in the final scene of the movie. The camera will zoom in on his face, and he'll reach up all dainty-like and pluck it. Then he'll say, "I'm gonna get you, Superman!" Maniacal laughter follows. Slam cut to black.

The audience'll be all like "Holy shit! He was that Lex Luthor!" If Snyder & Co. really want to make it a surprise, they'll call him "Alexander" throughout the movie, but right before he plucks that last hair, he'll say, "Alexander is dead. Call me Lex." It would be so super badass.

It works pretty well in Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Of course, the context in which the fight occurs gives it actual significance and doesn't make it feel like it's just Bats vs. Supes for the hell of it. Plus, the fight is only possible because Batman's power is enhanced by a special suit and Superman's power is diminished from having been hit by Kryptonite.

Speaking of the suit, there's an episode in Batman Beyond that uses the exo-suit to great effect. It's basically an excuse to get elderly Bruce Wayne back into action. What I love about the scene is that the usual futuristic rock/techno score is replaced by the classic TAS-style music when Bruce starts doing his thing. It hits the nostalgia buttons pretty hard.

What were we talking about, anyway?

Isn't there also something in Knight Returns about Supes still being depleted from the Corto Maltese nuke?  I'll have to go upstairs and check my copy.....

I don't recall that having any affect on him during the final fight.

I thought there was a line in Bruce's thought bubbles about knowing he's not back at full strength yet.  I might have imagined it.

Wonder Woman is the DC character we're supposed to pretend to care about. (If you were wondering, Captain America is the Marvel character we're supposed to pretend to care about.)

Any bets on which other characters they're going to fart into this narrative?

Boy, they blew the floodgates wide open.

Gal Gadot... I'd let her occupy my West Bank any day!

That doesn't really make any sense... I'll come up with a better one. Something to do with the Gaza Strip.

What you really mean to say is that you've been waiting for Gadot.
