So waitaminute....this "ten" thing only applies to picture?

That's some sort of relief.

The ten picture thing is stupid. It will split the vote way too much. And not all of those pictures even belong there.

Secondly, the Oscars are off their rocker on Avatar. It's going to sweep, we all know it, and it does not even deserve to be nominated for best picture. There is little difference between that spectical and, for instance, Star Trek.

Of course, Trek had better acting, plot, and pace.

No, I don't spellcheck.

I was hoping Watchmen would get a nomination for best makeup. Kissinger and Nixon were indistinguishable from the real people, and the aging makeup on everybody else was so good I was convinced they hired the actors' parents to play them. Ah, well. I suppose I can live with Watchmen's fifteen nominations.

They should repackage Watchhmen on Blu-Ray and DVD to reflect today's nominations:

Nominated for a record-breaking fifteen academy awards!!!

FROM THE VISIONARY DIRECTOR OF "300"!!!

THE MOST CELEBRATED GRAPHIC NOVEL OF ALL TIME!!!

No, that is my point. Dumb to nominate so many. Half of these appear to be purely political.

If I'd been nominating best pictures for others' consideration, I'm not sure I could have nominated more than three in good conscience.

I saw a bunch of movies in theaters last year. My guess would be I saw more than one hundred, since I seem to see at least that many every year. (Maybe I will compile in the near future. I have usually already done that by this point.) There have been a few standouts, but even the standouts didn't do that much standing out.

District 9 is just as deserving (or undeserving, depending on your take) as any of the movies in the running.

I like that Up gets a best picture nomination it probably wouldn't have otherwise though.

But I also have to question Inglorious Basterds. Is that another case of "good, but not THAT good?"

Judging from the critics' award circuit and the Golden Globes, Inglourious Basterds would probably have been nominated even if there had only been five movies nominated.

And then there's The Blind Side.

Yeaaaaah...I have no questions on The Blind Side. I know that doesn't fit.

As I put in the Avatar Box Office thread....

Don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed Avatar and will probably go see it again and buy it on BluRay..... but I really don't think it's Best Picture material, especially up against some of those other nominations.

I agree with you that it could well win, but I don't know on what grounds. Maybe they will give it the nod as an achievement in film-making rather than on creative and artistic grounds.

....fire alarm in the office went half way through that so I just hit "Save" and left. False alarm though....

Anyway, Up made me blub like a bitch a couple of times whereas the heavily emotional parts (supposedly) of Avatar barely registered.

Not exactly a scientific benchmark.....

Yes I think so. It is a very well made movie, IMO. And of course, it's very witty. On my list it belongs there above Up and District Nine.

idonotseekabanning.

I was "My Colon Sucks" from 1999 to 2006, but then they banned me and a handful of other users for coming up with humorous titles for Indiana Jones IV. It was ridiculous. So many people get away with saying so many hateful things in the Talkbacks, and all we were doing was trying to make others laugh. Some of the titles are preserved on this thread. A user or two may have said something homophobic, racist, xenophobic, or sexist in the thread, but I don't remember any specific instance. Whatever the case, about ten of us paid for it with deleted accounts.

The sucky thing is that once you're banned on AICN, your posts just completely disappear. It's as though you were never there. The only traces I can find of my original account are those where people went to the trouble of writing out my user name when responding to me.

It certainly is a fucked up place with a completely warped sense of morality around what is and isn't acceptable. There is no consistency in approach.

It is still on my regular digital path but this is mostly out of habit. I fear it is dangerously close to being a parody of itself and I get the impression that Harry himself has kind of lost interest.

They seem to go out of their way to make the site as visually repugnant as possible. That and the fanbitches is enough to keep me away, save for the random link that takes me to a review, without any indication that the link is going to that site.
