The Walking Dead

Watching it now. How f**king good is this show? So great to have this sort of story told at more leisurely TV pace rather than having to be done within 120 minutes.

We like it.  There'll be a new episode in twenty-eight hours.

This is a pretty good place to start: http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
This would be a good place to end: http://eztv.it/ (select "Walking Dead, The" from the search dropdown menu).

Can we get it banned in the UK before Dalty gets the second ep there? That'd be funny!

There was a scene tonight which is easily the most disgusting thing I've ever seen on television, outside of surgery shows.

Was it the one where Glenn was allowing all those filthy walkers to dirty the hood of his sweet ride?

Was that the scene were Horso finally got what was coming to him? Or did you mean something in the new episode?

If you were up on your Horso (so to speak), you'd know that only children and the lamed are allowed to ride on his back.  Since this is the case, the horse you saw clearly wasn't Horso.

The only Horso episode I enjoyed was the one where Horso got castrated.

I did too. I also felt sorry for the zombie in the second episode who was an "organ donor". I did not feel sorry for the racist asshole in the second episode. I wanted him to get his face eaten off.

Don't feel sorry for the horse.  It was a good death.

I have to say I found this episode to be kinda eh. I honestly can't say that I'm seeing anything here that I haven't seen in any other "zombie" type movie. Maybe my palate's unrefined, but I think once you've seen one of these movies, you've kinda seen them all.

I felt that the first episode did a better job of conveying that the zombies were people once. That story arc with Morgan and his zombie wife did a much better job of creating an emotional investment in the characters, which is why the scene towards the end of that episode becomes much more powerful as you watch Morgan take up the sniper rifle.

The "organ donor" zombie was just another zombie to me. Why should one feel more sorry for him than for any of the other zombies in that universe? He's not the only one who had a family once and he's not the only one who gets taken down by the survivors, so what difference does it really make that they make an effort to look up his name? That part where Rick talks about the "organ donor" as a human being felt like it was tacked on with the sole purpose of evoking an emotional response, which to me made it seem far less effective than the way that Morgan's relationship with his wife was built up during the first episode.

As I read the comics, I had the feeling that The Walking Dead was different from most other stories about zombies, mostly because the focus of the series isn't so much on the shock effect of the existence of zombies (outside of the first couple of issues, maybe). The real center of the story is an exploration of how a group of people deals with an apocalyptic event. After a few issues of the comic, the zombies become a permanent part of that world, something that exists and is dealt with on a daily basis, which is why that part isn't even the main draw of the series. What you get if you continue reading is a story about interpersonal relationships in the midst of a global crisis and about the way in which the human psyche deals with an absence of clear social structures.

In a way, I guess, 28 Days Later has already done this, but the difference is that the characters in The Walking Dead actually attempt to re-establish some form of daily routine and to start a new life in a world that seems to have changed for good.

Well put.

I kind of explained it to my Dad in a similar way, the zombies are just a plot device, the real story is about the response of the survivors, the social structures that people develop in the absence of law and order, etc.

I'll give it a chance, I have to say that there's a conservative side to me that really thinks this sort of thing should not be on television where kids can see it. Call me a prude if you will.

It's on a pay cable channel at 10pm here in the UK so not too many worries re: young kids here.  What time is it on in the US?  Do you have a 9pm & 10pm "watershed" like we do?

Whilst I have only seen 1 episode, I am liking the promise of the pace of the story.  Agreed that once you have seen one zombie movie you have seen them all..... to an extent.

I like the fact that TV allows you to step away from a prerequisite pace of a standalone Zombie movie (0-5 minutes introduce leading characters, 5-20 minutes show zombie apocalypse and let leads figure it out, 20-30 minutes introduce secondary characters, 30 to 75 minutes develop siege etc. etc.) and also pad out the bits in-between the sort of world presented in the Romero movies.

I have to say, I'm completely unimpressed with either episode so far. Of course I have yet to watch either episode, but that's just a detail.

Dalty, it's on at 10pm, and is also on cable.

We have FCC rules about bad language and nudity not being allowed on air prior to 10pm.  Some cable companies (I'm looking at you, BBCAmerica) try to tell you that this rule also applies to basic cable television.  This was their excuse for editing nudity and "fuck" out of shows like Torchwood and Being Human.  This is not, however, the case.  No FCC decency regulations apply even to basic cable TV as you must pay for it, therefore, you are choosing to accept what is shown.  But I'm rambling.

My point is that I'm still not sure how The Walking Dead managed to score a TV-14 rating.

Kinda makes you wonder what will be considered acceptable for the public in the next 20-30 years.....

TV advisory ratings are a joke, as are most entertainment ratings.

And I'll agree The Walking Dead is problematic for children. I came home late tonight from a meeting to find my 16-year-old watching the DVR'd episode without me and I called him a little shit.
