What are you watching right now? - Farewell to 2013 edition
Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Saturday, December 28, 2013
Last night I watched Casino Royale yet again. I realize this is the wrong thread, but this is my favourite Bond film ever. I was never really a huge fan of the 007 series, but I feel as though this the one I was waiting for.
Everything in this movie works: the story is complex but not impenetrable; the scenery is gorgeous(both female and geographical); the action scenes are intense but not completely over-the-top; and the ending sets up a second act that is more than up to the task of continuing this new iteration of Bond.
Now, I just have to watch Skyfall. Yes, I am behind the times. As usual.
You are slow. Craig's Bond movies are awesome. Even quantum of Solace, while flawed, has its charms.
Don't take so long to see American Hustle. Really well acted, great use of the 70s setting, and just lots of fun.

Spartacus, season 2
Is that Spartacus: Gods of the Arena or Spartacus: Vengeance? I'm currently watching Spartacus: Vengeance, which I would call Season 3, but which others seem to think of as the second season.
I am watching Vengence as well. Technically, it's the third serial, but Starz calls it the second season. Gods of the Arena was only six episodes long so I guess it doesn't count as a season?
I miss Andy Whitfield and pretty much gave up on the show after he died. I thought any replacement would suck. Surprisingly, McIntyre is filling his sandels rather nicely. Not your typical meathead.
I saw QoS a few years ago, I remember liking it, but not as much as CR. I don't get all the hate, frankly.
I've been underwhelmed by all the Daniel Craig Bond movies to date. I can't say I disliked QoS more than Skyfall (though I remember disliking QoS quite a bit). Now that I think about it, I've been pretty much underwhelmed with Craig going all the way back to LayFoyer Cake. Though I will admit I didn't mind him in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Just got my copy of Skyfall, but chose to watch Pride and Prejudice (Keira Knightley version) instead. Because I'm a chick, but mainly because I lurrrrve the score so much.
Tonight's New Year's festivities include going to our local arthouse, having some drinks and appetizers, watching a showing of Moulin Rouge, then counting down to midnight with more drinks and snacks. Best part is it's all 3 blocks away, so we don't have to worry about traffic or snow or driving, except when crossing the street. Have a good New Year, everyone!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II is tonight's big New Years film on terrestrial TV. Watching it now.
Damn, I had forgotten how good this film is. Snape's revelation is so well done.
A Good Day To Die Hard.
Never seen it. Heard bad things. Internal barometer set to 'Disappoint'.
Watched the remake of Red Dawn on Netflix. Finished about 10mins ago. I have already forgotten it.
Also saw The ABC's of Death. Hmmm, it was a mind-fuck on most counts. Not a real collection of short horror but more of a curious adventure in art-house shock, with sub titles. Liked the letters A, C, D and F. The Letter G was just lazy. And W was a WTF.
"Her." Well done and a nice exploration of the problems of human communication. I even didn't mind Joaquin Phoenix and I've never been a big fan. Oh, don't take anyone with whom you might be embarrassed to listen to weird phone sex scenes with.
Also, best move credit ever: "Armpit Sex Drawing:"

Is it a movie for everybody, or is it a movie for white people?
As I'm not not a white person, I don't think I can answer that with any confidence. A lot of scenes were filmed in Shanghai, however, so there were a lot of Asian people. I also noted a distinct lack of cool colors (bright blue, green, purple) in the costuming and sets--instead, lots of reds and oranges and yellows. Otherwise, I have no comment on color appeal.
