I am wading into my Xmas gift BluRay pile.
Captain America first, then Super 8. Maybe Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes if not sleepy.

Watching 'Die Another Day' on TV. What a shame. What a damn shame. First hour is amazing, then it turns into the worst of the 80s Roger Moore movies.
PBS will have it before long, Negs.
Still working through DS9. Also working through the Criterion Collection's "Monsters and Madmen" boxset I got for Xmas.
I'm trying to keep a list of all the films I watch this year so I can see if my taste is degrading at all. Of course, I still post on here, so it can't have that far to fall...
Saving Private Ryan. Never saw it before; Boy was 4 when it came out, and now he's 18 and saw the opening in Military History class. So I got the whole thing for us to watch.
OMG. Shakespeare in Love beat this? Rly? Someone should beat on the Weinsteins.
I just watched what is apparently the first part of the "Feringi arc". Jack would just love it!

The Oscars has a long history of what most folks consider (sometimes only years and years later, sometimes immediately) "unjust" wins. While the most famous is probably How Green Was My Valley's win over Citizen Kane, for me, the most glaring example was when Crash (the non-Cronenberg one) beat any of the other four movies (I don't even remember what they were, but they weren't Crash, which was good on 'em) it was up against.
When are you going to let the boy watch the follow-up, Shaving Ryan's Privates?
Oh Jake!
My memory of Saving Private Ryan is that it never quite lives up to the truly astounding opening.
The opening is harrowing. There are parts that come close, but I agree, Dalty.
I remember reading about the opening being disturbing for veterans. I went looking for articles. This article and this article say basically the opposite of one another.
The first one claims veterans saw it and weren't disturbed by it at all, having had more than half a century to put it behind them. The second one claims veterans went to see it and had their shit fucked up.
The first article appears to have been written closer to the movie's release date--it's almost like a "take your veteran to see it; he came from an emotionally heartier generation, and he'll be totally cool about it" propaganda piece. The second one was written about a week and a half later. It makes me wonder how many of the veterans disturbed by the movie went to see it because the first review fooled them into believing they'd be able to handle it.
All of them.

I already made that joke, and Boy said to me what he usually says when I make a joke: "Shut up, woman."
I came home tonight to find him and the spousal unit watching a movie nearly as girl-free: The Hunt for Red October. It'sh shuper.

I remember that one of the movies was Brokeback Mountain, which won in a bunch of other categories. Colbert made a big deal on his show about predicting that Crash was going to win even though everyone expected it to be Brokeback Mountain.
I watched The Adventures of Tintin a couple of nights ago. Spielberg's still got it. I'm probably not the first person to say this, but watching Tintin made me feel the way I felt when I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time. It's rare for me to get completely engrossed in a movie anymore, but I swear I was hanging on to the handles of my seat as Tintin and Haddock were hurled from one action set piece to the next. The one time I was pulled out of the experience a bit - and this is a real shame - was during the final confrontation with the antagonist. It felt strangely anticlimactic, especially after the breathtaking motorcycle chase scene in Bhaggar (which culminated in a slightly modified version of Belloq's iconic line from Raiders).
Even though I hadn't planned on it, I saw the movie in 3-D (but not IMAX). I'm not sure how much it added to the experience. It certainly didn't feel tacked on and didn't rely on gimmickry to sell the technology. I wonder if it actually amplified my enjoyment of the movie.
I can't remember if Jubbers made the Indiana Jones comparison in her review, but I know I did. I figure Jubbers will buy Tintin when it comes to video.

I used to say that to my mom, too. But she never made pr0n jokes.
Also, I couldn't help but read the last sentence in Connery's voice. Well played.

The second half of the video below shows Colbert's Oscar predictions. I would have posted the one where he gloats about the accuracy of his Da Colbert Code, but the video is unavailable despite being listed as one of the related videos to this one.
'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes'
Wasn't expecting it to be this good. Can also tell that, at some point, this film will make me cry!
Despite the nerd-positive reviews, I still was sceptical of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Stupid me. I really liked it a lot.
'X-Men: First Class' after this! Friday Night Movie Night over here, catching up on all the stuff I didn't see at the movies.

On topic, I watched last night's episode of Sherlock. It was brilliant.
