I am wading into my Xmas gift BluRay pile.

Captain America first, then Super 8. Maybe Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes if not sleepy.

Unleash the Merlot!!

I'm watching the fifth episode.

There appears to be only one place to hang out in Sunnydale. We're told exactly this in the first episode, but the teller was Cordelia, so I wasn't sure if it was actually the only place, or if she was saying it was the only place worthy of her patronage. Whatever the case, whenever anyone talks about hanging out, going out, going on a date, et cetera, they always end up at the same club.

I grew up in a one-horse town, so I totally sympathize on this front. We didn't even have the one place. There was nothin'. If you wanted to go hang out where the cool kids hang out, you drove fifteen miles to Boaz and "cruised the strip," or you drove thirty miles to Gadsden. Gadsden was the nearest city with a mall.

Cruising the strip was hilariously dumb and dull. This "strip" was a loop about half a mile in length that took you over the (no longer in use) train tracks twice. You could hang out of your window and talk to others cruisng the strip, but you weren't allowed to stop in the one parking lot along the way or pull over at any point. The cops would ticket you for loitering if you did this. I never really got the appeal.

All the other little towns surrounding Boaz (it wasn't too big, itself; even today, it only has a population of a little over 8,000 people) had as little going on as Crossville did, so those towns' teenagers also found their way to the strip. It got pretty congested. You inched along at about a mile an hour, and had to do a lot of stopping. The only thing even slightly exciting thing that ever happened was the occasional fight between football players from rival schools.

Anyway, I was wondering if the people watching the show during its original run ever complained about how often cast members wind up at this lame club with all the lame music. I recognize it for what it is: a cheap set for them to return to when they want a setting change. That said, I feel some sort of connection to this lameness, having spent so much time in Crossville.

Just Googled "cruise strip boaz." One of the results was a Facebook group calling itself "People who USED to cruise the strip in Boaz when it was cool to cruise."

The description for the page: "Just remembering when it was fun to cruise the strip with no where to go lol."

There are currently twelve members.

Sounds like these people have a strange definition of "cruising" if they're moving at 1 mph. Why don't they just walk the strip?

Walking burns less gas. Burning gas is important to southerners. Also, if they were to walk at blinding speeds of, say, three miles an hour, they wouldn't have time to soak in the rundown beauty of Old Boaz.

I forgot to mention that this part of town is called "Old" Boaz. Way, way back before Boaz became the 8,000-person metropolis it is today, there were just a few building huddled together. You had your grocery, your florist, your cakery, your general practitioner, your bank, and your train tracks. What else was needed? Nothing.

Urban sprawl eventually pissed and shat all over this small-town quaintness, leaving behind a brick-building cemetery whose one remaining purpose is to stare in silent judgment as the youth of today rolls past at a mile an hour, making out, fist-fighting amongst itself, and blasting Insane Clown Posse hits from the nineties.

We're thirteen pages into this thread (that's four blasphemous pages beyond the nine-page limit we like to set for threads), and I'm only just getting around to enjoying it.

That's because it's gotten off-topic.

I sort of took it that The Bronz was the only plast that let in under-21s.

I never thought it was particularly weird. Sunnydale was a small town, so it probably couldn't handle too many clubs.

Sixth episode looks to be a bully episode. Not too crazy about bully narratives. They usually turn out to be easy setups for paint-by-numbers nerd revenge wish fulfillment. Sometimes the bully and the bullied find some common ground, sometimes we learn how the bully has had it super-rough, and sometimes the writer goes balls-out, bathes the bullied party in pig's blood, and lets her go apeshit and bring down the gym with telepathy. Whether the bullied party snaps or simply wins a victory over the bully, though, the revenge fantasy is somehow played out.

I worked as a fiction editor for an undergrad journal back in the day. I had to slog through enough bully narratives in that one year of fiction editing for a lifetime.

I'm only about two minutes in. If I'm lucky, the writers just threw in some bullying to make it seem current/relevant. I have this gut feeling that Whedon wouldn't write a bully episode. Doesn't seem like his style.

Just looked it up. He didn't write it. God, I hope this isn't a run-of-the-mill, bully-gets-the-comeuppance episode. If it is, at least Whedon didn't write it.

I'm a little ill-at-ease when it's not a Whedon episode. With Firefly, there was Minear. His stuff was generally solid. He was on Angel, too. Does he write any Buffy episodes? I guess I can go look it up. Firefly also had Ben Edlund, whose writing for the show was also pretty solid. He's the reason I decided to watch Firefly, to be honest. I can still remember laughing until I got asthma attacks at his earliest Tick stuff. (I inherited my ex-stepbrother's comic collection when he went off to the navy. I considered his Tick comics the cream of the crop.)

Should I create a thread for my Buffy observations, so Jack and Quasar don't have to suffer getting tricked into clicking on this thread whenever they see there's a new post? I'm sure they're getting sick of finding out it's just me talkin' Buffy.

On second thought, if Dirty Wookie ever drops in and sees a Buffy thread, it might scare him away.

Really not digging this episode. It's the first one I've reacted generally negatively to (beyond the occasional negative knee-jerking I feel when I watch anything ever). I don't know if it's properly communicated above, but I've been enjoying the show.

The characters seem off (besides Xander, who's supposed to seem off) and humorless. There's a chance I just think this because I now know Whedon didn't write the episode.

There was a boy talk scene. Then there was a tutoring scene where the writers stuffed some generic Geometry talk in Willow's mouth to convince us some real schooling is going on. (Lots of porn scenes with the older tutor and younger student start out with generic math talk. "So, you see, the set of all integers is denoted by this big Z. In other words, Z is a totally ordered set without upper or lower bound."

So far, we have bullying, boy talk, and tutoring. It's like the writers sat down and asked themselves, "So how can we make sure the audience knows these kids are in high school?"

On the bright side, the writers of this episode only have one more episode under their belt: "Inca Mummy Girl." I'm about ten episodes away from that one. I hope I don't get increasingly glum the closer I get to it.

Oh my fucking God, they've worked a dodgeball scene in the episode!

"Hey, guys, remember how you always had to play dodgeball at school when it was raining outside?! Well, our episode reflects that!"

The rest of this episode is going to have to wait a few days.

I couldn't remember how many eps were in Buffy's first season. The only eps I had issues with were the aforementioned cheerleader one and (looking at epguides) episode 11. The 6th episode was The Pack, and I remember that one was pretty decent. Obviously Goits should never do research before watching an episode of anything.

Telekinesis, rather. With some pyrokinesis thrown in.

Sorry, I still have some lingering paranormal fixations from time to time.

When you see a picture of your favourite Kardashian bending over, what happens next has nothing to do with the paranormal.

I am watching myself fade fast after a very late night.

Goits would've said the episode spoke softly but carried a big stick.
