What are you watching right now Part VI - 2012 edition

I am wading into my Xmas gift BluRay pile.

Captain America first, then Super 8. Maybe Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes if not sleepy.

I don't think any of the Kardashians are hot. Except for the young one, but she's a Jenner.

Also, there were, erm, 12 episodes in the 1st season of Buffy, IIRC.

You appear to be correct, but I'm not sure why you're volunteering the information. Are you responding to something someone else said above?

Goiter, you have to follow the story arc:

Quasar mentioned that the episode carried a big stick.

Jubbers corrected it to say it carried a bid dick.

Jakester started thinking about his dick (well, one could argue that he never stopped thinking about it).

That made him think about the number of times he rubbed said dick while watching Buffy.

He recalled rubbing it exactly 12 times, thus 12 episodes.

I have a hard time (an entirely different sort of hard time from Jakester's sort of hard time) believing Jakester only rubbed it once per episode.

It was one long rub.

SMG wore some awesome push-up bras.

I thought Q said something about being unsure of the # of S1 episodes. If he did not, then I was just volunteering it to increase my post count.

I was trying to save it for an "Over 9,000 Club." Dalty won't get his ass in gear, though, so I've been left twiddling my thumbs.

I started watching "The Pack" again.

Eaten principal? Are Sunnydale people going to start realizing there's something really fucking wrong with their town/school any time soon? A science teacher was decapitated not too long ago.

The hyena kids are genuinely creepy. A+ on that front, writers.

This zookeeper strikes me as implausibly knowledgeable in matters of the occult. I suspect he might not be such a good dude.

Willow keeps watching this video of hyenas while she babysits Xander. Not sure why. Does she think she's doing research? Is she trying to spook herself more than she's already spooked? Did the writers not really know what to do with her, throw their hands up and say, "We'll just throw in a bunch of shots of her watching that hyena video!"?

I think this episode's subtle message is that pack mentality is bad.

All right. Finished the episode. The four ex-hyena kids apparently remember everything, but absolutely no mention was made of them at the end of the episode. They ate someone and bore witness to Buffy being a super-powered badass.

Is this a loose end? Will they pop up in future episodes?

It's a shame they didn't encounter any vampires while they were sleeping under the stars in the park. Isn't Sunnydale supposed to be teeming with vampires? A vampire/hyena kid fight would have been pretty cool. Their M.O. is pretty similar: nocturnal hunting, super-strength, bloodlust. Might have been neat to see them fight over prey.

Speaking of loose ends left untied: what happened to the boy Buffy went on a date with? Does he show back up? I sort of liked him, but I got the feeling he was a one-off character. He disappears without further mention in his episode, too. I guess you can add him to the list of Sunnydale residents who've seen some wicked-weird shit and lived to tell the tale.

Glad to be past "The Pack." It was less frustrating once the focus shifted to action, but I don't feel like it was up to the par set by the first five episodes.

It's "Angel"!

"Angel" was a big step up for me. It doesn't hurt that I already like the character, and that I've seen a good bit more Angel than Buffy

This episode made me wonder if people were generally surprised by the revelation that Angel is a vampire, or if it was something people were expecting. Were there a lot of people watching at this point? Was the show a runaway hit, or is it the kind that built up steam over a few seasons?

I was a little sad to see Darla go. I had this feeling she was being set up to be a recurring character. Maybe she'll be back. (Don't they sometimes come back?) I feel like maybe I remember seeing an episode of Angel with her in it, but it could have been a flashback.

There might be a commentary for the episode on the DVD; I think I remember it, cause I remember Joss commenting that he didn't think anybody would really be surprised by the Angel revelation, but then he thought a lot of people were from reactions he saw (I'd still guess there was a sizable portion of the audience that wasn't too surprised). The show wasn't really a runaway hit; Alyson Hannigan talked about stressing over whether they would be picked up for a second season, though I think that was at least partially her just fearing the worst. I think the reception was pretty decent out of the gate, but season two is when the show really took off. I think season two was the ratings peak for the show; I remember commentary about the third season mentioning how the greater serialization of the story for that year hurt its ability to appeal to casual viewers. But, I am certain that seasons two & three together were the show's peak, though I can't be sure which individual season did the best. Season four is not a well liked season, and saw ratings suffer. Season five is considered a return to form season, and saw the ratings bounce back some (IIRC), but not all the way back. Still the ratings were considered good enough at that point that the show being cancelled caused dismay (supposedly the WB took a very hard stance in negotiating the deal with the production company (20th Century Fox), since I guess the way the costs for shows tend to work is that after five seasons, if the show continues, the production company tends to get a richer deal than they had gotten before; at least, that's what I've read. It's not something I know a ton about.).  UPN picked up the show for a sixth season, and I think the hype was pretty hypey for the show's return and the initial ratings were very high before quickly falling off. I think during the seventh season new management took over at UPN, and they claimed that picking up the show after the WB let it go had been a mistake based on its performance for those two seasons.

Anyway, sorry for all that boring stuff. Yeah, Darla shows up on 'Angel', both in flashbacks (they loved the flashbacks on that show, though probably not quite as much as 'Highlander' loved flashbacks) and in the present. Darla also shows up in some flashbacks in 'Buffy', though 'Buffy' doesn't do nearly as many of those.

Thanks for the info, Jack.

Noticed something in the eighth episode that's probably a mistake. Digital Moloch (I'm in a department that's pretty obsessed with Jewish studies, so I know plenty about Moloch) pulls up the file on Buffy after webcamming her face. The first time it shows the file, it shows her to have been born in 1980. The next two times it shows the file, it shows her to have been born in 1979. I don't usually catch this kind of stuff, so I was proud of myself when I caught it.

Also, looks like it's an Internet episode. Computer-themed stuff on shows from the nineties is usually ends up being pretty amusing. Kind of seems like a "Warn Your Kid about the Dangers of Internet Dating" episode, so far.

I can't imagine that attentive viewers were surprised that Angel was a vampire (I thought Angel was a centerfold, myself).

Darla was fun, yo.

I don't think Buffy was a runaway hit its first season. I think that into/after S2, it was a huge hit for the WB, but that probably wasn't saying much relative to the big 4.

My daughter is watching S1 of Buffy as well. She just finished Angel. Somehow, I didn't have "The Pack" in my iTunes library, but I rectified that (it was on my drive, just not added). She was unsurprised that Angel was a vamp.

Maybe I should make her wait 'til the fall to begin S2.
