What are you watching right now Part VI - 2012 edition

I am wading into my Xmas gift BluRay pile.

Captain America first, then Super 8. Maybe Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes if not sleepy.

Unleash the Merlot!!

I didn't find much wrong with The Avengers.

I've also spoken favorably of six out of the seven Buffy episodes I've watched.

Jack would refuse to like it as well, based on the trailers he saw. Also, Hicks would hate it because that's what Hicks does, besides being a douchebag. I guess those two things aren't necessarily independent of one another.

Msunyata did some sort of article on Chronicle. I didn't read it, since I had just downloaded it and was avoiding spoilers. (This reminds me: I still need to watch Chronicle.)

I liked the video Chronicle's director did on Superman. I think I posted it one of the video threads. He's John Landis's kid. His dad murdered Vic Morrow with a helicopter.

I think a fair number of the twenty or so Retro Reviews I did were generally positive. I'm a nitpicker sometimes, but that doesn't mean I always dislike the things I nitpick.

* * *

Finished the Internet episode. Two high schoolers murdered (though one was made to look like a suicide), and it's just sort of swept under the rug by episode's end. Life goes on in Sunnydale!

Landis was acquitted, wasn't he?

The internet episode was kind of lame. It wasn't as horrible as "Beer Bad," but definitely not one of the highlights of the series.

The "swept under the rug" aspect of all the weirdness comes up from time to time.

Yeah, Beer Bad was probably the worst for me too.

No way, 'I Robot, You Jane' is definitely one of the all time worst 'Buffy' episodes, and simultaneously probably one of the greatest. It's more fun than some of the other bad episodes, I think (I suppose that's the thing it has going for it over 'Beer Bad'). The Jacket episode in S7 is definitely up there, though at least it sees the return of the rocket launcher. The S1 internet episode has the cheapness of 'Buffy' S1 going for it, as well as the hilarious evil kid going on about the power of the internet, and of course (this ties in with the cheapness factor) the horrible/awesome robot at the end.

He was acquitted. From what I understand, though, Spielberg (and maybe a few others) demonstrably lied under oath to facilitate this acquittal. Numerous crew members came forward during the trial and testified both that he was generally reckless--as well as specifically reckless where the helicopter scene was concerned. In this case, the big names (like Spielberg, who wasn't on scene when it happened) told one story, and the actual crew present told another.

I've also read that despite his having already been told the helicopter was getting too low, there is clear audio of him yelling "Lower! Lower!" into his bullhorn immediately before the copter's decapitating plunge.

The two kids who died during the accident were also shown to have been working beyond the maximum number of hours allotted by child labor laws. Landis, specifically, was reprimanded for this.

The kids' parents and Morrow's kids (one of them being Jennifer "I'll Do Any Nude Scene" Jason Leigh) shadily settled out of court following the deaths.

I've also read that Spielberg (who, again, is said to have demonstrably lied under oath) immediately and completely distanced himself from Landis once the movie was finished, and that he refuses to discuss the incident.

I don't think Landis is a finger-steepling villain, or anything, but I'm leaning toward believing that decisions he made (in defiance of others' protests, and, in the case of the children, in defiance o child labor laws) directly resulted in three deaths.

I can try to dig up some sources on this stuff so you can decide for yourself whether you think the sources are dependable. I feel like I've written about all this on Corona in the past, but I can't find the page.

All that said, acquittal is acquittal.

I did chuckle pretty heartily at the one kid's overly zealous line reading of "The only reality is virtual! If you're not jacked in, you're not alive!"

I've been thinking of my fairly harsh take on the writing in "The Pack." I figure the writers' second episode might be better, since they already milked their stereotype-heavy, "This is what it's like to be in high school!" cow dry.

Watching "The Puppet Show." Finally, they've made a reference to how much fucked up shit has gone down. The new principal says the place has "quite a reputation," then mentions spontaneous cheerleader combustion, suicide, missing persons, and the former principal being eaten. He says this must be a result of "wooly-headed liberal thinking."

It's a clever way to sweep it all under the rug. "All that crazy shit happened because the last principal was a pussy. Now I'm here."

Of course, crazy shit is going to continue to happen, and the principal will eat his words. I'm putting the death toll for the episode at 1.5 people.

I don't know why people who are used to dealing with vampires, Internet demons, and hyena kids refuse to consider the possibility that a dummy can act on its own.

Three students bought it this episode. That's twice the number I predicted.

Nice twist with the dummy.

I'm surprised the talent show took place at all, considering one of the contestants had her heart ripped out two days before showtime. The only person in the entire school who even feigned being distraught was Cordelia.

The night after the chick had her heart ripped out, Buffy and her mother are talking about the talent show, and Buffy seems reluctant for her mother to attend. Her mother asks, "Honey, is there something bothering you?" Buffy says, "Nothing. There's just a lot going on right now." See, if I had been Buffy, I would have said, "Yes, actually. One of my classmates just had her heart ripped out, and nobody gives a goddamn!"

Enjoyable episode, overall. Would have been cool to see the dummy in more episodes. He and Muppet Angel could have worked together.

I saw Chronicle. I was very impressed. It's well worth your time. Unless you're Goiter. Then you'll find somethng wrong with it.

Yes, that was one that I read good reviews about, so I thought I'd try it even though I'm a bit older than the target market. I enjoyed it a lot more than I had expected to, although I thought I thought some of the end sequence CGI was a bit chintzy. Or maybe just too much of it. For a smaller budget flick, though, very well done.

Yeah, not all of the CG worked at the end, but in general it was pretty good. For instance, the scene where they're playing football is pretty awesome.

I saw this linked at whedonesque, but haven't really looked at it except to read the first paragraph.  It's apparently part one of eight, and I guess it's somebody fairly new to 'Buffy' & 'Angel' along with somebody who's seen them before (at least, I think it's two people and not just one; it's got a podcast, and you usually need at least two people for those to be interesting) going through the two series and discussing them.  I figured I'd link it here so maybe I'd remember to go back and check it out more thoroughly later.

The "somebody who's seen them before" appears to be Drew McWeeny/Moriarty. Could be interesting.

I'm really enjoying "Smash," the singing isn't annoying like it's become on "Glee," even when it's not on stage. The Bollywood-type number they did as a fantasy last episode was super.

I enjoyed the Bollywood fantasy as well Negs.  I thought I was going to hate the singing in this, but am surprised that I am enjoying it.  Of course, it helps that I have had a huge crush on Katharine McPhee since she was on American Idol.

Turn your head and cough!
