I am wading into my Xmas gift BluRay pile.

Captain America first, then Super 8. Maybe Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes if not sleepy.

Unleash the Merlot!!

I just finished watching the series premiere of Alcatraz. Damn it, after Lost was over I vowed never to watch a J.J. Abrams show again, but this one looks pretty decent. I know they're probably setting up way too many questions the show won't answer in the end, but I can't help liking it.

It's almost funny how Alcatraz is trying to establish emotional and visual associations to Lost:

  1. the plot revolves around a mystery that happened on an island,
  2. there are inexplicable events that superimpose the present and the past,
  3. the soundtrack sounds like it was lifted straight from Lost, and
  4. Jorge Garcia plays one of the characters.

Yet, even though I recognized this overt manipulation, I fell for it.

Currently working my way through season 1 of Game of Thrones. Compelling story telling, but it seems a bit too sprawling for it's own good sometimes. Hard to keep track of all the different characters and plotlines at times.

'Justified' S3 starts tonight. I've been reading some critics summaries of the recent TCAs and listening to Sepinwall and Feinberg's podcast about it. Months ago people were joking about how great the panel for 'The Killing' was going to be, and asking what in the hell AMC could be thinking for even having one. Not long after that the panel for 'The Killing' was cancelled; I was really disappointed. Anyway, originally, after the S1 finale, the consolation was that the killer would be revealed early in S2, like episode two. Just recently I saw somebody in the comments section of an article write that the rumor now was that the killer wouldn't be revealed until the S2 finale. That made me grin. But at the recent TCAs, the AMC president confirmed it. I squealed with joy. I mean, these guys really seem to know what they are doing. They are basically following my prescribed formula: don't go a little bad, go a lot bad. I immediately had to search the net to find out what at least one of 'The Killing' supporters was saying about this (I imagined this news would even strain the ardent apologists, and turn some of them against the show). I looked up televisionary: he had no new articles on his site, so I searched him on twitter, and even went through the effort of scrolling back through his last four days of tweets, and this guy tweets like a motherfucker. I mean, there was a lot of stuff to tweet about lately with the Golden Globes and the TCAs, but he had to be tweeting fifty times a day. I finally got to his reaction to the news about 'The Killing' S2; here are some of his tweets and retweets.

Critics chuckle when AMC's Joel Stillerman confirms that THE KILLING killer won't be revealed until the end of season 2. "Be nice," he says.

"We clearly did not manage expectations. I can confirm that the killer will be revealed in the S2 finale." - Joel Stillerman re: #TheKilling

It makes me want to weep. Openly.

It's just hilarious that the president of AMC is trying to make it so crystal clear now exactly when the killer will be revealed, and he's basically begging the critics not to go nuts. Why did they have to cancel the panel? Oh, how I would've loved to read about Veena Sud (the delusional exec producer and showrunner) getting grilled by the critics. I think she would've cried. I could imagine her fake-grinning so hard her faced cracks, while her eyes watered.  God, I wish this was all just a set-up for them to do another rope-a-dope with the season 2 finale: it would be the greatest thing in the history of television, but they DON'T HAVE THE BALLS!  What do they care?  Their brand is already irrevocably damaged.  Do they think anybody cares about 'Hell on Wheels'?  Not after 'The Killing' S1 finale!  You can do all the 'Deadwood' ripoffs you want, AMC, nobody's buyin' it!  But now, if you could only find it in your black hearts to do the greatest ever fuck-you to the TV viewing audience.  Nobody would ever see this coming.  Oh, they'd joke about it, but they'd never believe Sud & AMC would ever do it.  It's the greatest opportunity in entertainment switcheroos since Shyamalan thought he made up Amish people.

Anyway, one cool part about scrolling through all of those tweets was that I read all the ones about the 'Justified' panel. I had read months ago that two actors from the one season gem 'Boomtown' (apparently exec producer Yost was also involved with that show) Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson were joining the cast this season, and that made me quite happy. 'Boomtown' had a great cast, and I can't wait to see what those guys get to do this season. Apparently Carla Gugino is also in at least one episode and playing a US Marshal named Karen. At the TCA panel, Yost apparently was coy as to whether she was basically playing the character Karen Sisco from 'Out of Sight' (a movie also based on material by Elmore Leonard). I kinda like that sort of crossover stuff, so that sounds like fun.

Note: I knew there was also a primetime show a couple or more years ago based around the Karen Sisco character, but I had never watched it.  It just now occurs to me that I think Gugino played the lead in that show, too.

I watched Moneyball just in time to see it not win anything at the Globes.

I watched the pilot of Alcatraz last night.  Just like Mal, I immediately saw the similarities to Lost.  In fact, my wife and I commented that perhaps all of the inmates were in pergatory for the past 50 years, but that JJ Abrams would deny that until the very last episode.

Despite the JJ Abrams signature items, I did enjoy the pilot.  I won't ruin it with spoilers for Jakester and others that may not have seen it yet, but I will say that it intrigued me enough to keep watching.

I think the funniest thing for them to do now would be to cancel The Killing just before the season finale and never air that last episode.

Didn't some AMC suit promise that they'd heard our frustration and that Rosie Larsen's killer would be revealed "early on" in Season 2? Yeah, damn right that was promised.

I don't have to look it up. Some Brits and I had this discussion a decade ago in Mannheim. And then we teamed up with some Canadians and told some Alabama kids that their version of the events that led to the War of 1812 was not the rest of the world's version.

Something to the effect of "that woman has two fanny packs." (Personally, I like the Hodge twins descriptions better.)

Alcatraz was okay, but Doctor Grant was asked some pretty direct questions about what's going on, and responds with non-answers. As did the inmates. Everyone seems to accept this. At least Sarah Jones' character pointed out that figuring out WTF is going on is probably, at a minimum, really damn important.

I feel like I've been burned twice already by Abrams & Co. with Alias and then Lost. I'm not especially keen for another go-round.
