What? No mention of Olivia Wilde's Boobs????

Jakester: A lot of movies and TV show stories make no sense today because the best people aren't getting hired for the job. Instead, it's people that have the right connections that are getting the jobs. Often these writers are OK writers, but they're not the best for the particular job. The thing is, it's a check, and in this economy taking any job takes paramount over the concern whether you're the best writer for it.

I read the earlier script for TRON 2, as it was called, and it was less engaging than the LEGACY script.

No matter where you go, there you are.

LESS ENGAGING?!  Wow.  As fun as it was seeing Flynn on screen again, I have to admit that I quickly got bored with his scenes.  Maybe it has to do with his best lines being spoiled already, and I already knew what was coming next.  Or it could have been that the plot was just so obvious.

But yeah, Pat.  I agree.  It really seems like the writers subscribe to the George Lucas school of filmmaking where "good" is "good enough."  I don't have the hate for it that McWeeney does, and overall, I'm glad I saw it (for free, no less - yay loyalty programs), but my brain is telling me that this movie is just begging for a full-on Plinkett review.

Finally saw Inception.  I liked it.  I didn't think it was stunningly complicated or that there were any unexpected twists or that it was the greatest movie of 2010 by a long shot.  I just liked it.  I also probably won't watch it again.

Saw lots of films over the break. All were awesome. True Grit (new and original), The Social Network, The King's SpeechBlack Swan, and A Serious Man. I keep flip-flopping on whether Social Network or Black Swan is my top film for the year.

On a side note, during The King's Speech, anytime the archbishop guy came onscreen, all I could think was "Look out everyone, it's The Master!".

Saw Tron: Legacy today. Meh. A lot of it made no sense.

I just saw it earlier this week, myself, and I think I can answer at least a few of your questions.

<SPOILERS>

  1. I think the original plan was for Sam to get out of the Grid and to delete CLU from the outside. That almost worked, except that CLU was about to go through the portal with Sam and Quorra, which is why Flynn decided to sacrifice everything in order to ensure that only Sam and Quorra get through.
  2. Yeah, CLU on his own wouldn't be so tough to deal with, but as you saw towards the end of the movie, he was preparing an army of re-appropriated programs that he was probably going to take with him.
  3. If I understood correctly, Tron was reprogrammed. One of Flynn's flashbacks shows what happened when CLU staged the coup: Tron stayed back to fight while Flynn escaped, but Tron was then defeated by CLU and his guards. I figure that CLU then re-appropriated Tron (since, according to Flynn, CLU doesn't have the power to create new programs, but can only change their function). When Flynn succeeds in turning Tron to the "good" side in the end, it's probably some residual memory of his previous programming that has remained intact and was activated by Flynn. His color turning from orange to white in the end is similar to Darth Vader's redemption at the end of Return of the Jedi, when he takes his place next to Obi-Wan and Yoda.
  4. The part about the ISOs is really the only one I didn't fully understand, i.e., I don't know what purpose they would have fulfilled in the real world.
  5. It was probably some kind of synthetic food à la The Matrix.
  6. I'm not exactly sure WHAT Flynn does at the end - it looks like he activates some sort of self-destruct mechanism. As to WHY he does it, my response to question #1 addresses that point.

The A-Team.  I enjoyed it.  I don't know why people were so upset about it.

Along with the Batman Beyond DVD set I got for xmas, I also ordered the complete Justice League set. Now I'm debating on whether or not to order the Superman TAS set, currently selling for $36 on Amazon. Thoughts? Also managed to pick up the complete I Love Lucy set for $20 yesterday!

I'm watching The Wonder Years on The Hub right now. Two thoughts:

A) I'm strongly considering buying my own cable package just for this channel

B) The Wonder Years has got to be a leading contender for the "Best Show of the Last 25 Years" award, right?

Such a shame it'll never see the light of day on DVD.

The Wonder Years is the reason that most males of my generation were at some point in love with Danica McKellar.

15 episodes into Legend of the Seeker.  I have been reading the books since the first was released in the mid nineties, so I've been avoiding this series.  I got sucked in (my supergeek dad and his love for all things sci-fi and fantasy- again) but you know what?  It's not bad.  They've taken quite a few liberties, but it is essentially a decent representation of the novels.

I watched a few episodes.  It was okay, but couldn't quite hold my interest.  I've never read the books, though.

I only read the first book and really, relly didn't like it (I hate a lot of books though). I'm 8 episodes into LotS, and I'm digging it. Really thought the Denna episode was cool.

I caught a few episodes of this show on TV some time ago and it looked pretty goofy. Almost Xena or Hercules kind of goofy.

Sam Raimi produced all three of those series.
