I'm hoping to go to Brazil again in a few months... diving and scuba will be on the agenda.

I have dived with all types of sharks in the wild and love it.....  never anything like a Tiger or Great White (at least, that I have known about!).

They are talking Tiger or Bull sharks being the suspect in this case but I don't know.  Doesn't fit the attack profile of a Bull and even though Tigers can be big sons of bitches I am struggling to think of one ever biting somebody clean in half.

You may be right.  I'd love to dive with Great Whites, don't get me wrong-- but with a cage surrounding me. 

Some crazy mofos swim with Great Whites without the cage!  Balls of brass.

It's getting to be more accepted practice, depending on the behaviour of the shark.  Older, wiser (but bigger) females tend to be a better proposition for free-diving than younger males.

Same as a tiger (the big cat) really.  If it's well fed and not threatened then zoo keepers go in the enclosures with them without too many problems.  However something happens to trigger threat behaviour or feeding behaviour - such as a zoo keeper falling over with his back turned on the cat - and all bets are off.

Same with the sharks.  If it's an experienced shark that doesn't just go around trying to bite any old thing in search of a meal, and has had bad experiences biting boat props or getting a mouth full of bony human and plastic surfboard in the past, then it's better.  Also helps if it's just had a nice, fat, juicy and filling seal for dinner.

On the Reunion thing, a Bull is aggressive enough but not usually big enough to bite a human in two and swim off with half the body.  Tigers are more opportunistic scavenger feeders so even though they are big enough it doesn't fit the attack profile.

I am no expert but a massive, sudden attack that does that much damage is more Great White territory.

Also, satellite tagging has shown Whites migrating from South Africa across to North Western Australia.  Draw a straight line from the cape to North Western Oz and you get pretty close to Reunion Island.

Great white, mid way through a trans-oceanic migration and not fed for a long time due to paucity of prey in the open ocean comes across Reunion Island low on energy and very hungry......???

It was practically joke.

I once went to a nightclub, got massively drunk and ended up... ahem... romancing an older, larger lady. The next morning I was mercilessly mocked by my so-called friends who insisted on referring to her as "The BFG". I thought it was most unkind and innappropriate.

Anyway, as I was saying.  My money is on White.  I could be wrong.

Yes, I couldn't help breaking in with that saucy double entendre.  The tempatation proved too great to overcome.

I think it's tragic, the current situation with the world's shark poluation.  I can't believe that shark fin soup is served all over the world, and that people will defend it based on some extreme and myopic interpretation of freedom of choice.

White Sharks have been my greatest fear since I was a child.  It is a fear combined with respect.  Seeing them or other sharks up close is definitely on the bucket list.
