Work problem - HELP

Posted by RedKarma on Thursday, May 27, 2010

I'm not annoyed right now, I'm hugely pissed off. Do we have a Pissed Off thread? No? Well I'll post it here. Maybe someone out there can help.

My husband has been with his current HVAC (heating & AC) company for 3 years doing installation. Every late winter, they lay him off until it gets hot and then they bring him back. He was thinking of making the jump to Tech Svc this year because he's also a certified tech. They had him come in last month and get ready for the new season, gave him his phone back and all the paperwork to restart our health care & insurance.

Then nothing was heard from them until this Tuesday. They offered Mr RK the tech spot, and said he would go out yesterday with another tech for "training". Not only did they barely show him how to do the paperwork, the tech didn't train him at all, or in fact meet him on the jobsite until after Mr RK had already worked four hours entirely alone. They just made round after round of service calls and kept him out 15 hours, no meal breaks. Mr RK came home so exhausted and upset he was threatening to hurt himself and at his wits' end.

Mr RK called this morning and tried to talk to his supervisor who suggested he take this gig, but the supervisor just passed him on to his "new boss" who didn't answer the phone or return his call.

Please if anyone out there knows anything, HR or legal related advice, links, or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. I can't have my family in such chaos.

Is there a union?  I'd start there if there is.  Otherwise...I don't think a day or two is sufficient time to be talking lawyers yet.  They'd say it would be able to be explained for any number of reasons.  After three or four days of it...then maybe you should talk to someone, but make sure Mr. RK documents his attempts to work things out with his supervisors.

Thanks Jake.

He's planning to quit now.  I told him to Homer Simpson it, just leave a note saying "I quit.  Go Hell." - but I think he's doing something a little more traditional.

What he should do is take 3 times as long to do a project. When the supervisor asks him about it, have him tell the supervisor he received no training. If he never hears from the supervisor, he gets to continue to laze through jobs.

Is there no other HVAC company to work for?  Somebody has to want an experienced guy as Summer closes in...

As a person who has worked in the staffing/employment field for 6 years, I would not advise him to quit.  Even experienced, certified people in maintenance fields are out of work for months at a time.  Quitting means no unemployment benefits.

I would go into the office of the supervisor/manager and try to discuss the situation, if that doesn't affect any change, I would put his resume out to other companies.  Beyond HVAC there could be opportunities with apartment communities, LTC facilities, government agencies, and school districts who are frequently looking for people with that type of experience.

It's a tough market out there and if your family would be in trouble if he didn't have a job for several months, it's best to stick it out while he finds the next opportunity.

Good luck.
