X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Posted by Kaeos on Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Okay excuse me but WTF?!?!?

I just saw a new trailer for the film on NBC, kind of cool as they run through exactly which mutants and characters to expect in the film, Sabertooth, Emma Frost, Gambit, Agent Zero, Silver Fox, Deadpool, Kestrel, Cyclops.....

CYCLOPS?!?!?!

Okay so obviously there is a side thread (At least I hope it's on the side) showing a teenage Scott Summers.

TEENAGE?!?!?

Okay I am officially concerned about continuity here. Granted I know a lot of folks would rather discount the original 3 films as irrelevant crap, but with his "producer" hat on Jackman has made clear statements that this film IS tied in with the others.

Grrr. Continuity issues bug me.

Ok I am not up on X-Men mythology, but I am assuming that the first time Wolverine meets Cyclops is when he's in the mansion during the first movie. Is this what is bothering you?

That's not Cyclops.

This gets into spoiler territory a bit (so stop reading here if you want to go in fresh), but I believe it's the guy they overload with powers to reel in Logan. He has some control issues, from what I understand. If you go through frame by frame, you'll see it's also the same bald-headed guy with the Baraka-like forearm swords. Since his face looks grizzly, some folks are of a mind that he is a post-disfigurement Deadpool. I don't think he is, though.

I think Rob Liefeld might be making money off this movie. That saddens me.

That among other things. I dunno. I guess I'll have to reserve judgement till I see it.

Now as for that NOT being Scott Summers? Okay. Maybe. Sure looked a lot like him and his powers.

The movie looks good but I am just worried that they are tying to fit soooooo many characters into this movie that they will end up forgetting what the hell this movie is even about...?.... I mean, can you say Spiderman3!

I keep my standards low, that way im never dissapointed

So....your okay with say...a mob movie with 5 or 6 main characters? Or a "Oceans 11" type movie with a bunch of heavyweights on the same screen. But a bunch of superheroes in 1 movie is too much?

I'm only bitching about who that bunch consists of! lol

Just saw that same trailer again, and it is Cyclops. They specifically displayed the name across the screen before showing him.

You're absolutely right. I just saw the following:

http://www.superherohype.com/news/x-mennews.php?id=8179

There is another guy in the longer trailer who appears to be using his powers (the same guy alluded to in the above spoiler talk), but that's supposed to be Cyclops. They don't call him Scott Summers (at least not in the ComingSoon.net clip), so there is the off-chance that he is not "our" Cyclops, but I think it's pretty obvious from his appearance that he is supposed to be the same Cyclops established in the X-Men movies.

Not sure how they are going to play this one. Spoiler hounds don't seem to care enough about the movie to dig really deep and hand their findings over to us on a silver platter.

Remember the good ol' days, when we had storyboards and a script for a movie a year or more before release?

A work print is on-line. Torrent it if you want to spoil the fuck out of yourself.

From my comment on the news story:

It has its problems. I doubt anyone suspected otherwise. Some could be fixed, some probably won't be.

In short (the last two are light spoilers):

+ Logan is, apparently, a really great guy who cries when is sad and is sad a lot.
+ Will.i.am is not an actor.
+ I hate fat suits.
+ Ryan Reynolds is wasted (by which I do not mean he is drunk).
+ Gambit's fine, I suppose. Accent-wise, they opted for Country Boy over Creole.
+ I never really connected with the movie as it was presented to me. That said, I am curious to see the final cut.
+ Danny Huston sounds like his dad.
+ Clark Kent's going to be pissed when he finds out what Stryker had done to his parents. What they were doing living on the outskirts of the Canadian wilderness is beyond me, though.
+ The big surprise guest star at the end isn't much of a surprise.

(HEAVY) SPOILER:

So that guy was Deadpool, and he does use Scott's powers (which were taken from Scott, who, as we all know now, thanks to the trailer, is in the movie). Ryan Reynolds was severely underused, and due to the nature of his Weapon XI modifications, he doesn't even get to talk during his final appearance. He has the healing factor, so there's a chance, I guess, that he could survive what is done to him. Maybe. I don't know. Head separated from the heart. How essential is the heart in rebuilding? Of course, this was the work print, and the decapitation was completely digital, so there's a chance they will fix it so that he is just gutted, or maybe cut in half. Deadpool can be pretty awesome. Liefeld deserves none of the credit for his awesomeness. His costume's decent, I suppose, but since it's just a mix-and-match of the Deathstroke and Spider-Man costume, I hesitate even to give him points for the costume.

If Deadpool does get his own movie, I hope they take some of those powers away from him. Really, they only need to take away the Baraka blades and the Cyclops blasts (at least among the powers he exhibited). If he keeps the ability to teleport (though he uses a device in the comics), superhuman strength, heightened reflexes, and his healing factor, he will have most of the powers he has in the comics. I wouldn't mind him developing the ability to break down the fourth wall, though I'm guessing it would seem a good deal hokier on screen than it does on the page.

I'll be going to see this later today.

I've already seen it, if the Internet's assertion that the only difference between the final version and the work print is completed effects happens to be correct.

I don't care what anyone says, it was a very fun ride. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it had the best action out of any of the X-Men movies thus far. Jackman owns that role. He really wowed me this time out, and Liev was VERY impressive as Sabertooth. Very scary. :) And I had serious doubts about him for that role. I want to see it again. The story? C'mon, what are you expecting, The Godfather? Plot-holes galore, but I didn't mind one bit. I loved Monaghan's *cameo* and Will I.Am. did a decent job too. Maybe it was because my expectations were so low, but the movie plain kicked a$$.

I was given a DVD of the workprint a week or two ago. I still haven't watched it. In fact, it's still with me at work. I am singularly unmotivated to watch this movie. It's a bummer, because outside of Spidey, he's probably my favourite Marvel character, and I like Jackman and Schrieber. Even before the workprint was leaked, I was probably not going to see it because of the issues with the script, filming, etc that I'd heard about.

I'm sure I'll rent it at some point, but it sounds like the studio's interest in the project was not making a quality movie, but rather in making cash-grab.

Jake, if you can spare the time, see it in the theater. I've seen the workprint, and it is NOT worth your time. Everyone, go to your theater and spend the money.

I really liked it, but it had some problems. They were very good about making sure you knew the mutants (and their powers) in the first two X-Men films. Big oversight in this one, rewarding the fanboy and leaving the regular moviegoer in the dark. I waited (PATIENTLY) through four films for Gambit, and I get him for 5 minutes? Weak. At least he didn't suck balls. The Scott thing... definitely not in sync with the X-Men flicks. I always thought they cast him too young, but to try to take it back now? Not cool. Liev Schreiber was fantastic and Hugh Jackman OWNS Wolverine.

Also, the scene after the credits... not happy with waiting 10 minutes for that.

Which scene did you see? There were a couple that you could randomly get. We got the Deadpool one. I wanted the Wolverine one. C'est la vie.

It was ok. Jackman and Schreiber were great. Glad to FINALLY get Gambit, wish he would've had more to do. I'll watch Ryan Reynolds in anything as long as he's shirtless. The inclusion of Cyclops and Emma Frost really bugged me too, just screws up the whole timeline. I hope the next one concentrates more on Wolverine rather than throwing a bunch of mutants at us.
