Adam's Batshit Crazy Republican Presidential Candidates Roundup

Posted by Adam54 on Thursday, May 26, 2011

Edited: This goes well beyond Michelle Bachmann now. Aside from maybe Jon Huntsman, they're all just nuts. This is the place to keep track of them all!

The only U.S. Rep ever elected president was James Garfield. He was in office for roughly 6 months in 1881 before being assassinated. Gerald Ford was also a former U.S. Rep, but he never won a presidential election. He just sort of fell into the White House after Watergate. John McCain had better chances of being elected after George W. Bush than Ford did after Nixon.

Here's a fairly decent explanation of the history that Batshit Bachmann is running against: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cspg/smartpolitics/2011/01/bachmanns_potential_presidenti.php

But as that points out, she definitely isn't lacking in name recognition like Reps usually are. Thanks so much, 24 hour news cycles.

I should clarify that. James Garfield was the only one to ever make the leap directly from U.S. Rep to President. Plenty of other presidents served in the House at one time or another before their presidency, but they made a stop at some statewide office before making the leap to the White House.

Czar Reed was president.  Well, he wasn't elected president.  He was, however, my president.  He may still be.  It may be Henry Cabot Lodge, now.  I'll have to check.  I don't keep up with my personal politics.

McKinley was a US rep longer than he was a governor, and probably had more notoriety as a rep, giving his name to an influential tariff bill. He ended up assassinated, too.

Uh-oh. Now you've got me going ... Chester A. Arthur never held an elected office before becoming vice-president, but since he assumed the presidency after Garfield's death, I suppose that doesn't count. Pretty big jump from port collector of New York City to veep to president. Arthur was also a dandy who had a large collection of waistcoats.

Another President assasinated?  Fucking hell, that is just careless.

You probably haven't heard of him, but my US Rep, Thaddeus McCotter, has announced his run. He's not totally bat-shit crazy, at least not like the others, but enough to think he can run.

I like how Bachmann has endorsed the "good parts" of slavery.

Michelle Bachmann was in the town where I live last weekend. It was a thrill.

Bachmann and her competitor, the (at least ten times) more crazy Rick Santorum have signed a pledge stating that (among many crazy things) they would outlaw pornography if elected President. It's as if they're doing everything they can to get Jakester to not vote for them.

I like how they want to vigorously defend the First Amendment by outlawing free expression.  It's brilliant.

Santorum is completely batshit crazy.  Wait, aren't the Republicans the ones who advocate "Second Amendment Solutions" to public figures with whom you disagree?

Tim Pawlenty dropped out of the race today. I hope that that pathetic, miserable, slimy, hypocritical piece of shit has the balls to come back to Minnesota like some sort of fallen hero. He spent the last three or four years destroying my state in order to become more appealing to the conservative nutjobs, and I absolutely could not be happier to see someone fail so spectacularly.

Note to Bachmann. You can't get all pissy over looking crazy on the Newsweek cover if you come on TV to defend it and look even crazier.

So do any of these jokers have a chance to beat the Obamanator? Are things bad enough to let the crazy take down the indecisive?

I dunno, there's an opinion article in Newsweek this week comparing Obama to Neville Chamberlain, suggesting he should let Hillary run in 2012 ... and I can actually see his point.

Not enough to vote Republican, though, I'm not insane.

I think the only one who would have a chance to beat Obama is Rick Perry. I'd say Jon Huntsman, but he's clearly not crazy enough to get through the primaries. Perry is both insanely religious and rich enough to sail through the primaries. Once the general election comes around, there are still tons of people who vote strictly based on which candidate they'd most like to have a beer with, and since the last hyper-religious cowboy governor of Texas was such a likable twat, Perry would stand a chance.

Though I still desperately want Bachmann to get the nomination. She'd lose handily to Obama, and I'd get at least two solid years with her not representing my state in any way, shape, or form.

Oh, and the fact that this week she wished Elvis a happy birthday. On the day he died. *headdesk*

FYI, grocery shopping yesterday.  $4.68 for a gallon of milk.   Price of a 1-3 year old "used" car has risen nearly 50% since "Cash for Clunkers".  That is why this doesn't surprise me: http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-gallup-poll-obama-approval-20110817,0,7430987.story

Obama will fix it.

So is it Perry or Parry?  Colbert has me all turned around.

That happened and we all let it happen.
